That's the problems with diesels...they are very complex and can be a bear to diagnose and repair.
Actually they are more simple by design than gas engines. No spark plugs or ignition system. DEF and DPF and other emission regulations make them more complex. Older diesels, before these regulations, usually will go many thousands of miles and years, asking for no more than an oil change and fresh filters. Never became popular here due the high initial cost, slow acceleration and clouds of black smoke. Except for Mercedes in the late seventies and eighties, they must have sold more diesels than gas cars.
"And with our truck's comically short bed (don't ask)" - A. You could have gone with the longer 6' 4" bed, B. 5' 7" is the standard size bed for all Big 3 crew cab trucks.
"lack of a bed extender (again, don't ask)" - It's not as if Mopar doesn't offer a bed extender, I'm pretty sure it can be ordered from the factory just like every other truck.
t's not like Ram doesn't give you the option for a longer bed or a bed extender, you guys chose to buy one with the shorter bed. How can you knock a truck for not having specific features that you could have ordered from the factory?
No ignition system, but the fuel delivery system is much more complicated. Modern ignition systems don't fail, but get some dirt, water or air in a diesels fuel system and you have a major pain to deal with.

They always order the shortest bed they can get. No known reason.
