The aftermarket is you friend here. Some companies make bulbs with an integrated diffuser that eliminates the directionality problem. Plus you can dial up the lumens big time if you wish.You guys should do more of these relatively small mods, which is as far as many readers will want to go themselves. I'm sure you'd find no lack of companies willing to send you free stuff.

I second this. I've got some universal LED panels in my 2009 Civic and I love them. They're just a circuit board of LEDs with an adapter for whatever bulb type you use. They're a nice neutral white without any blue or yellow tinge and I always get remarks about how bright they are. I've got a few friends who have picked up similar products and love them as well. They even make custom-fit ones that are cut to fit the shape of your map/dome light housing.

With that being said, I would hope aftermarket additions like this wouldn't be necessary on a modern luxury car, especially a six figure Jaguar. However, most map lights aren't really designed to light every crevice of the interior. They're mainly designed for reading things and providing a little extra light/safety when approaching a car at night. If anything, I think the more pertinent issue would be the apparent lack of adequate backlighting on the controls. You shouldn't have to turn on a map light to find any important controls when driving a car at night. In your situation, I probably would've just used the flashlight on my iPhone.

I'm with Kurt Niebuhr when it comes to controlling headlamps. I also don't trust adaptive cruise control, but I use a normal cruise system every chance I get.
