What parts do I need to change so that my car can pass California smog test?

Hello all,

I purchased an 2000 Mazda Protege in Oklahoma, and I need to register it in California. I am trying to figure out ahead of time if my car will be able to pass the California smog test.

In case it doesn't, what would be the parts that I have to replace in my car to make it pass the smog test? is it just the catalyst converter or do I have to replace many other things?

Don't do anything until after it is tested. Then only if it fails do you need to even consider how to go about doing testing to first prove why it failed, and then you can start thinking about the parts. An example would be if you went and replaced the catalyst right now you could easily install one that isn't Carb approved and then you would find yourself replacing it all over again.

As of right now is the Check Engine light on, and if so are there any drivability issues?

You don't have to replace anything unless your car fails the smog test. If it's in good shape and you haven't modified the car or removed anything, you should be ok. California only restricts NEW cars that try to come here from the other 49 states, if they are not california certified.

Thank you all for your helpful replies. I do have the engine check light on with the code for "catalyst converter efficiency below threshold" so I will have to change it eventually, perhaps its better to change it in California with one that complies there. The only problem that I experience is that the MPG is low. it is about 15 in the city while it should be 24, so it needs a tune up. I have been postponing it because I don't know where to start from. Any suggestions?
The carfax is excellent and I had the oil and fluids changed. the engine , transmission system, brakes and tiers are all good.
