Hi,

which would you choose?

If driving 7K miles per year and choosing between 1) a new 2015 loaded TDI SLE Sportwagen ( for $33K) or 2) a CPO 2015 Allroad premium plus with 3K miles (for $39K)

Sportwagen pros: good mileage, $6k cheaper,
Sportwagen cons: not AWD ( we ski the sierras 6x per year), leatherette seats can be sweat inducing, reliability issues?

Alllroad pros: AWD, nicer interior, 5.5 year warranty remains, potentially higher value retention than Golf
Allroad cons: gas mileage fair , no nav ( but i can use a smartphone)

Thoughts ?

I'd get the Audi, just for the looks and AWD.. Doubt you can make a case from a pure value perspective, though...

You can buy some pretty great snow tires with that $6K and have enough left over for a trip to Europe. The only thing AWD with all season tires does for you is gives you better acceleration in snow. It doesn't help braking or steering, and in fact might be worse than a FWD with snow tires when going downhill.

TDI is no slouch in resale either, with a 63% retention level after 3 years.

Also I don't see any edge in reliability for either car over the other. Great thing about warranties on German cars--you'll probably need them.

So, to my mind, it comes down to how much a pampered environment and more prestige is worth to you. Nothing wrong with either of those! If price were no object, the Audi is the choice.

The Sportwagen is a great car. I owned a 2012 and the new one is better. At 7000 miles a year I don't know that fuel economy is an issue. I like the Allroad a lot but I think you get more bang for the buck with the VW IMHO.
