    Could you also have the last ground connection be on the good car? There shouldn't be any battery gases, especially when the battery is in the trunk.

    That's a good idea to have a specific place on the car to connect the ground connector. I'm not sure if its just me, but I can never seem to get a quality enough connection when selecting a ground and often just give up and connect it to the negative terminal.

    With all the electronics in new cars, I'm leery of giving anyone a jump. One little miscue can cost hundreds.

    Same for me...after 2-3 attempts of trying to find some exposed metal somewhere to ground to I just put the darn thing onto the battery and call it a day. No fire yet...

    Unpainted metal is what you need, and strut mount bolts at the top usually fit that bill. And you have to work them back an forth a little so the clamps get a good bite.

    Every car I've had has a cast metal D-ring near the engine block, opposite of the battery. Not always easy to see, especially at night. It might be an attachment point for lifting the engine out, but it also makes a secure and safe ground clamp.

    That works, too. But those engine lifting eyes are becoming rarer as plastic engine covers become more common and the quest to shave weight marches on.
