Mazda3 vs All Contenders

I'm looking for a new car under $20k but can go up to $25k if necessary. The 2014/2015 Mazda3s seem to return incredible value, combining utility, sportiness, functionality, efficiency, safety, etc. I've looked around a bit and the VW Golf seems to come closest. Really, I just wanted to put it out there to see if anyone has other ideas/suggestions to think about. I'm not opposed to a used car with under 30-40k miles on it. Performance, MPG, and reliability are high on my list. Please share any thoughts you have!

My wife has a new GTI, and that's a great choice as well (along with the "base" Golf models). Inside and out, it has a bit classier and traditional look. Interior overall has a bit more finished feel and look than the Mazda (felt-lined compartments, soft-close compartment doors, etc.) The 1.8T engine in the base Golf has a very lively feel, and still returns great gas mileage.
As for your priorities - Performance, MPG and reliability, I'd give a slight edge on performance to the VW, advantage to the Mazda for reliability, and a push on mileage.
Between the two, I'd say you're looking at the right models - both seem to lead the compact class. I think you get a little more for your money on the Mazda, and you may find some "bugs" with the first year run of this new model Golf (we've had some minor annoyances with the wife's GTI). But if you find you like the overall feel of the VW, it's probably worth going that way.
