Replacement of CV Axles/Half shafts

I was recommended by Firestone to replace the half shaft in the front wheel. Not both but one only.
They are talking about $260 for each ,which makes it $520 in case I go for both. This seems way too much for my liking. I did not get to hear too much noise while turning ,yet not an experienced driver so can't trust all my feelings. Can anyone suggest the best way to go forward ? I don't have the manufacturers warranty. Only 35K miles on the car. I want to save as much money as I can and do the needful at the same time.

Well given the mileage and where you got this recommendation I would most definitely seek a second opinion. The only justification for replacing the CV joints would be: a) a split rubber "boot" on the half shaft which is visibly leaking grease, or b) a very pronounced knocking sound if you make a 360 turn while the wheel is turned completely right or left. (try this in an empty parking lot obviously).
