Good move and definitely fits in with the character of the project. The stock interior was chintzy to begin with, so I suppose it makes a good platform for aftermarket mods (I would have hated to mess up the interior if it was nice to begin with).

So does this put Sir Tate higher up on the "want list" when road trip season starts up again?

Great choice. Apple CarPlay is now in the 2016 Honda Accord and I've played with it a little bit. It's really slick! I don't mind Apple Maps, but I'm a minority in that. These smartphone integration units are really cool. It's nice how easy it is to install up-to-date technology.

If the editors with Android could use Google Auto and let us know how it works I'd be very grateful. Considering a head unit upgrade like this on my 2010 Subaru Forester which has terrible stock infotainment.

Neat. I'll be curious to see if it has the "polish" of a factory system, especially in this early of development. My guess is that a lot of the features aren't quite ready for primetime yet.

I don't understand why the silver trim had to go away. Was it connected to the factory head unit? It looks as though it was removed and replaced with the same factory piece in black. The black does make the head unit stand out/look better in photos. Kind of like a spotlight on the new product...

I'll be interested to read how the integrations with this head unit work. Buying a system that ties in with a smartphone for apps like maps seems far wiser to me than buying a proprietary nav capability hardwired in to the car.

One frustration I've always had about aftermarket audio systems, though, is that it's so hard to find units with decent, chunky knobs for primary controls like volume. Why can virtually all of the OEM systems manage this while virtually none of the aftermarket systems can?

On a random note, I forgot how great the automatic climate controls were on these cars! Slide the right dial to auto, set your desired temperature, and then slide the left dial to Auto Hi *or* Lo, depending on if you like more or less air blowing! That last feature should be on every auto climate control vehicle that uses a knob for fan speed!

i put the avic-5100nex (6.2" with nav) in my car and have been very happy with it. relatively easy diy install. you can easily disable the parking brake requirement w/out the need of any special wiring now. it's on youtube.

I would never buy a head unit without a volume knob. Never.

I almost bought a Pioneer. I lover the sound they produce but the lack of a volume knob was the turn off. In general, when I did my research the Pioneer was more money for less features, however I was on a much stricter budget than you were. I was only on a $500 all in and I needed to do speakers and a subwoofer (including an amp).
