Good observation, but in all honesty, nothing surprising. Cars like the A3, CLA, etc. aren't really aimed at people who regularly carry adult passengers in the backseat. They're geared more towards 20-somethings who don't have a family yet and really only need the two extra doors and backseat for the occasional short trip with more than one passenger. Anyone who needs to carry people in the backseat on a regular basis (especially adults and not just kids) would probably just skip over the A3 and look at an A4 or even a CPO A6.

I am in my 40's and I own a 2015 A3 and I tell my friends who are tall that they cannot ride in the car. My wife and I are around 5' 6" so no problem for us. It is a bit tight for my child in his car seat, but I won't have the car when he gets taller than us. I bought this size over the A6 because I felt it was easier to park and more nimble in traffic.

Or get the A3 Sportback e-tron! Which is what I just ordered.

The lack of headroom was a dealbreaker for me. Ended up with a GTI instead, whose backseat (while hardly palatial) can accommodate my 6'3" friends in reasonable comfort. The GTI also gave me the manual trans that I really wanted, more cargo space, and Apple Carplay.
