My knee-jerk reaction is that the Volvo is badly underperforming on fuel economy, but I don't think that is quite fair. It certainly underperforms relative to the EPA ratings. But relative to its weight and performance, it seems just fine. This is a 3700lb sedan with 300hp and a 0-60 run of 6 seconds flat by Edmunds's consistently slower-than-Car&Driver's methodology. It's a tad quicker and heavier than both the Accord and Camry V6 that I consider benchmarks for fuel economy/performance tradeoff. Those cars are rated at 25 and 26mpg combined. Dunno. 28mpg highway in the real world for this Volvo seems fine to me, and given the price point of this segment, I don't see a few mpg worrying owners even if the small-turbo fad isn't paying any real world dividends versus the better 3.5L V6s.
