What is the purpose of the boost gauge?

So I'm guessing you would use this stupid display to determine if it's either time to downshift or upshift based on the position of the needle/line? If they are far apart, drop it to a lower gear. If they're close together, shift to a higher gear. Too bad they couldn't just create a dashboard indicator as a light to let you know when it's time to shift. Oh, yeah...they do. Overall, this seems pretty useless. Especially since it's an automatic.

The gauge is like having your own personal Mr. Scott. Want to pass a line of cars on a 2 lane before the curve and wondering if you got enough power for it, check the Mr. Scott gauge. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT8CRi9k4bo

This is what happens when Volvo tries to attract Honda Civic Si buyers

About the only time I see it really being useful is passing on a two-lane. It makes sense in Rolls Royce. The chauffeur wouldn't want to face the embarrassment of trying to pass somebody at my client-is-above-the-law speeds only to find out there isn't enough left to make the pass. In the RR it also serves the additional benefit of a visual aid of how much better you are than the current situation. Neither of these is something I imagine as helpful to a Volvo driver.

It has no use, just like tachs have no use anymore. Even with a standard trans, all one needs is a redline light or series of lights. With an automatic, tachs in modern cars are just a waste of dash space. Computers wont let engines over rev ......and again, all you need is a light.
