That front end is going to be controversial... Or it's going to take a ton of getting used to.

Good news - it's one of the two.

Why, Mazda, why? I just traded my 7 year old Armada for a Durango last year and would have gladly waited for this redesign. I liked the old CX9, but it was a but long in the tooth compared to the Dodge. Sadly the Durango's reliability has been subpar so it may have been worth the wait. I really like this crossover! I can even get past the caricature of a grill because the rest of the package is so impressive. Now they just need to put that turbo four into the Mazda 6!

What about the long rear doors causing parking lot dings ?
Why do the front grill all look the same in Mazda, Toyota, Hyundai ??

LOVE this new design, but am definitely concerned about this small 4-cylinder turbo engine in a vehicle this size. The newly redsegined Volvo XC90 is currently experiencing this exact problem. It strikes me as a bit odd that Mazda would want to experiment their new, small engine/turbo technology on the largest vehicle in their fleet. Really? I mean, what if the masses determine the vehicle is significantly under-powered with this engine? Consumers will obviously not buy the vehicle if you do not at least offer them the option to have the V6 instead. And all this talk of recirculating exhaust gases to cool the engine has me a little freaked out. What if those recirculated gases find their way into the cabin? Can you say, carbon monoxide poisoning? I guess we will have to wait to see how it all plays out. I am very excited to see and drive the production version, and hope that Mazda will work out any kinks within the first model year (if not sooner). Definitely keep a V6 option!

    Tabbycat's heart in a Lion's body. No V6 and a souped up turbo .

this thing looks great. Love the front end.

no issue to me going with the 4. Most people that buy these won't know what is under the hood anyway. as long as it moves when they push the long pedal!

hey, most F150s are rolling with turbo 6s now instead of V8s, so a 4 cyl in a van (er, CUV) is NBD.

Dude, you do know that just about all cars have EGR, right? The only difference is that this one has a cooling jacket around it. Also, you have it backwards. The engine cools the EGR and not the other way around.

Hey 7driver- thanks for explaining. I'm not familiar with that technology, and the way it was described in the article sounded odd and potentially unsafe. But what do I know :)

This could be interesting. 227hp in a vehicle like this sounds underwhelming, 250 on 93 octane is better but not spectacular, but 310 lb-ft at 2000 rpm? That is impressive. That's more than most V6's at peak, and should make it feel plenty strong in most everyday driving situations assuming the delivery is smooth and the curve doesn't drop off much as rpm climbs. I'll dare to say that kind of low end torque might even make it feel a little bit like a V8 driven casually. If it works as well as it reads on paper it's probably a pretty good real world balance, and knowing Mazda this will likely steer and handle a cut above most of its competitors.

I like the overall "Kodo" design on all of their current lineup, but I do agree I think this iteration of the grille is a little bit too prominent. I think I liked the version on the last refresh of the last gen CX-9 better, just like I prefer the original CX-5 grille to the refreshed design. And I absolutely despise this recent trend of sticking the screen on top of the dash like it's a tablet jammed into it. I guess it works well, but I think it completely screws up the look of the dashboard - on every vehicle it's done in. I don't care if Mercedes and BMW do it, I hate it there too.

And for a moment let's assume the engine works well, wouldn't it ROCK in a CX-5 or 6!? Mazdaspeed MX-5? That would be a beast with 250hp and all that torque. Actually it might be too much torque for a Miata.

It will be interesting to see if they have reduced the weight much as they have "skyactiv'd" it. This would be perfect in the two you mentioned as well.

I agree, very impressive output. I love a good naturally aspirated V6, but this spec rivals or beats the torque specs for the V6 engines it will be competing with and it arrives at a much lower rpm to boot. For people who are bemoaning the on-paper power differences, consider a Toyota Highlander. According to Edmunds it's one of the fastest mid/large crossovers available, and it's engine makes 270 hp @ 6200 rpm and only 248 ft-lbs of torque @ 4700 rpm, yet they timed a 4464 lb Highlander XLE V6 AWD with a 7.3 second 0-60 sprint. Only real world testing will tell if the Mazda CX-9's new engine will be successful, but I wouldn't necessarily write it off yet.

That ugly iPad sticking up from the dash can be retracted when not in use ?

No, it can't. We have the 6 and you get used to it very quickly. Mercedes has the same thing. I think it actually helps keep your eyes up a little and more on the road.

Motor trend had a preview in the latest issue. Loved the look and interior. They talked at length about Mazda purposely tuning for real world, not advertising. So tons of torque down low, and less HP at 6k RPMs where nobody goes. It seemed quick enough, and very spritely getting moving.

Also down about 250 pounds from last model I think. Svelte compared to done of the competition. Steering and handling sounded impressive. Gonna be the drivers car of large CUVs!

EPA just rated the new CX-9 at 25mpg combined for the fwd version on regular gas. Pretty impressive for a three row with over 300 lbs torque. I think it was one less for awd.

Any idea when these will be at the dealers (other than "Available Summer 2016") ? The CX-9 will be on my short list along with the Honda Pilot.

    Thanks,
    Phil

I have read differing comments on Memorial Day (end of May), sometime in June to all the way to August time frame. Regardless of when it launches (interested as well) calling it a 2016 so close to the 2017 model year is a bad move. Of course the 2015 CX-5 GT I purchased was in June 2014 and it had rolled out months before that.

Don't know for sure but was told during my last oil change at the Mazda dealer that it would be late May or early June as far as THEY knew. EPA numbers look really good. Fwd is 22 city, 28 hwy and 25 combined on regular gas which is recommended by Mazda.

I am starting to see inventory listed on the local dealers web sites, based on other threads I have been following Australia had their ship arrive in the last week delivering units for their marketing launch and the cargo ships twin sister arrived in the Port of Tacoma (WA) this week as well so its very likely we will see inventory in the next 30 days or less.

Foturnately (or unfortunately) my purchase windows in this time next year when our current Mazda lease is up so I will not have to deal with the dealers demanding sticker on the Signature line during the initial launch and perhaps time for product to get flowing and any kinks in production worked out.

Downside is my purchase window is next year so I have to wait, unless I can convince my wife (dealer will likely say yes) to trading in early.
