1992 Ford F-150 Straight 6, Front Gas Tank Problem (Dual Tanks)

I don't know if this is a common problem with this truck or not. I can't start my truck with the front gas tank , nor does it do well on hills. But once started on the rear tank I can flip it to front and it runs a little sluggishly. Sometimes it actually seems to be doing good, But I can never start it on the front tank and its very sluggish on hills, On rear tank it runs great. Also and I'm thinking its connected. The check engine light comes on after a few minutes of the engine starting and stays on till I shut it down. When I restart it the check engine light is not on, but after a minute of warming up , its back on again. Any ideas out there as to why and how to fix it?

Hello! Without having the vehicle here to test I can only make educated guesses, but if everything else is normal, I would suspect the fuel pump in the front tank of being weak. There are two test procedures for this condition described at the following web address: http://troubleshootmyvehicle.com/ford/4.9L-5.0L-5.8L/how-to-test-the-fuel-pump-1 the other thing I would look at is the tank vent valve, if this is clogged or partly clogged it would keep the pump from pushing fuel to its' full capacity. Let us know how this works out please. Good luck.
