2016 Honda Civic - Edmunds Road Test

Yesterday, I was piloting our Civic and needed to pull out from a city side street onto a major thoroughfare. Looking to my left, I could see some approaching traffic, with the nearest car in the far-left lane. There was a suitable gap for the closer lanes, though, so I entered the thoroughfare and hit the gas.

    Honda has finally seen the light with turbo engines for performance. Regardless the EPA mpgs for this little turbo engine, I bet real world numbers are worse than the older generation HF Civic.

    Its an impressive vehicle and makes choosing the Turbo almost a no-brainer since its available mid-level (EX-T) and not restricted to the Touring only (like many manufacturers do). Clearly, a 2.0L SI/R will be a screamer.

    Real world numbers look to be spot-on with EPA numbers. You'll have to check the fine print because Fuelly hasn't broken it out by engine type, but the Turbo seems to be doing very well.

    I noticed your infotainment screen is suffering from the "no temp displayed" issue that seems to be plaguing many new Civic owners. It seems the new infotainment system has lots of bugs that need to be ironed out.

    @schen72 I think I just had the climate control system off in the picture. As far as I know the temps display correctly. -- Brent

    The special thrill you get with shifting gears and winding out an old Si, listening for the "VTEC" kick at high rpm, is absent in our Civic.

    Ironically the new 1.5 Turbo engine re-introduces Honda's old school VTEC system. The most common system used now is i-VTEC which is continuously variable valve timing. However the VTEC system doesn't seem to be available in the U.S. 1.5 engine. The U.S. version doesn't have any VTEC system. This engine is actually called the VTEC Turbo in other markets and has about 25 more HP.     Overall average for the Civic (on fuelly.com) increased 3mpg year over year, so while you may be correct about the HF vs. 1.5T, it appears that Honda has done what they set out to do.

    That's all thanks to the low-end torque of the turbo engine...
