55,614 miles and have a hole in my engine

I have a 2009 BMW. I bought it new. I started having problems with my heat not working properly and had it repaired multiple times while the car was under warranty. My heat stopped working again and took the car in -the car is now no longer under warranty- and now I am told that my heating problem is due to my engine having a hole and leaking coolant. I only have 55,614 miles on my car. I have owned a number of different brands and none have needed a complete engine replacement until now. My 328i needs a new engine.
Do BMW's usually have major problems with engines breaking down and needing to be replaced?
