Air conditioner suddenly quit working in Volvo 2005 XC90

Our XC90 has 225,000 miles, with about $6000.00 spent in maintenance over the life of the car. Motor mounts, throttle body repairs, etc. Not bad for the service the vehicle has given us. However, we were heading uphill in 100 degree heat a couple of days ago and the air suddenly quit being cold. Next day, it blew cold again, but I noticed an unusual intermittent high-pitched belt or pulley sound. Any suggestions?

6,000 just became 7,500 at least. Need a new AC compressor.
