Hello all,
I have a 2014 highlander with about 45K miles. So far the vehicle has been relatively trouble free. On a road trip last month, the check engine light came on and the traction/cruise control disabled. We made it to the destination, but the next morning, the engine made a loud knocking upon start up that went away after about 1 second. Because we were in the middle of nowhere, we drove back home a couple days later and headed straight to the dealership.

They said that the oil filter housing drain insert was inadvertently left in and crushed by the oil change place we used and that's what caused the check engine light and that after changing the oil/filter everything should be fine.

Well, everything is definitely not fine. Upon start up, in the morning, the car makes a loud knock that goes away after a second or two. After looking at videos about how the highlander's filter is changed, i don't see how it'd be possible to leave in the drain insert in a manner that would restrict oil flow. in other words, with that insert in there, there'd be NO way to put the filter back together.

This is really sounding like the dealership looking to blame a local oil change place for a problem that should be covered under warranty.

Any advice?
Marshall

IF you don't trust what the dealership told you, find a good independent mechanic to look it over. Something like this shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

I don't see how an oil filter can trigger a check engine light. But if you were low on oil at some point, that could cause camshaft wear and a noise on start-up.

First thing to do is determine what's causing that noise. Then you can more accurately determine if negligence or warranty is a legit concern.
