Starting issues

I have a 2000 chevy cavalier when I turn the key nothing happens no dash lights no radio windows don't work I get nothing car died on way home and this is all that happens if I short across the starter it turns over good but won't fire why would the car die and now nothing happens when you turn the key??? HELP

I think I'd start with the fuse box to check if there's any voltage coming into it. Also examine the harnesses for shorting/fire damage, etc. Obviously the battery is ok, since your starter spins over rapidly, so it's not an alternator failure per se.
