Jeep grand cherokee limited knocking/slipping front end

Having knocking coming from front end or transfer case in my 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited 4.7 liter. Front end spins freely when in 4low while on Jacks. It also won't engage front wheels in ditch, at highway speeds it knocks when I get on it after 65
