Hi Steve, I have been following all your posts on prices paid on various cars to get a feel of final prices out of door. Wanted to thank you for all your efforts to educate the car buyers on the nuances of car buying process and get a good deal. I really wish the car buying process becomes a hazzle free atleast when my 2 yr son is ready to buy his own car!. I am out to buy a new 2017 Highlander XLE is looking at North NJ toyota dealers. There is a 0 % apr for 36 months or 0.9% Apr for 60 months promotion going on until 1/3/2017. I dont see any other banks offering a better rate than .9%. MSRP price i received for XLE with Carpets, destination (Captain chair) is 41,250.00. I am thinking of something in the range of 37.5K including destination charge. Is that price a stretch ?

    Thanks!

Your target is around 9% off MSRP.

I was thinking the usual range is 8 to 12% off MSRP, but my neighbor the car dealer (he's a GM at a domestic store) reminds me that the range for decent deals is 6 to 12% off MSRP. I like my range better. :)

Either way, your target isn't unreasonable at all, but Toyota dealers generally seem stingier than, say, Honda dealers. And TMV for a NJ zip right now is only about $650 under MSRP. I'd get a bunch of quotes and see how they stack up and then work the two or three best ones.

And remember that dealers make a bit of money putting loans together, so that helps some.

I picked up a 2017 Highlander Limited today, MSRP was 45,907.00 My cash / finance price was $41143.00 and my lease cap cost that I ended up doing was 41,643.00 (no toyota cash on leases.) I felt like this was an amazing price for a 17 and was super appreciative at their offer out of the gate!

    Highlander XLE - Msrp = 39,980 & Dealer Invoice = 36,503
    Carpet Mats - 225/174 ( Msrp/invoice)
    destination - 940/940 Msrp/invoice)
    fuel charge - 9.20 ( invoice)
Toyota dealer advertising fee = 653 ( invoice)
    so total MSRP = (39,980+225+940) = 41,145
    INVOICE = (36,503+174+9.20+940+653) = 38,279
Got a Costco car buying rate of 38,879 ( discount from msrp 2265) and extra doc fee 299+ttl

Hi!  Looking for an XLE FWD.  Offer is 36867.  Does that include destination?  What fees should I look out for?  I'm in Boston. Are there any particular tips or pitfalls I should be aware of?  Help!!!

You'll have to ask the dealer who made the offer.

Have you ever purchased a vehicle before? The list of pitfalls is endless.

I live in Sacramento, CA and began the search for a 2017 Limited Highlander. Having bought a car through the Costco program 5 years ago I figured that it would be good starting point. In my region, The Costco deal is $800 over invoice. I asked the fleet guy if this was the best deal and he immediately said he would do $150 over invoice. They would give me "dealer invoice" for accessories.

    Invoice $39,387.00
    roof rack 303.00 (msrp 350.00)
    bumper prot 120.00 (msrp 139.00)
    Mats 175.00 (msrp 230.00)
    Tow pack 635.00 (msrp 699.00)
    fuel 9.20
    dest fee 940.00
    TDA 762.00
    +150 over inv 150.00
    toyota cash back<500.00>
    Total $41, 981.20 + tax and license.

The deal ends up being 8+% off MSRP, I think I will shop this with a few other dealers and see if I can save a few hundred more dollars. Can't hurt, right?

(Originally got quote from Costco program which was over invoice value...challenged them to meet at invoice pricing for vehicle and all options; then challenged neighboring dealerships for better offer - best one agreed to $120 below vehicle invoice and to include all options at no extra labor charges if not preinstalled). Basically emailed 14 dealerships within 200 mile radius for 3-4 days as we narrowed in. Took printouts of emails to dealership in person, which then beat the best emailed offer.

I'm in the Seattle area. Looking for a 2017 Hybrid XLE with all-weather cargo liner/mat pkg + roof rack cross bars.

    MSRP: $42,869
    Invoice: $40,044

So far got an offer for $100 below invoice + TTL. Is that a good enough deal?

I'm asking for $42,500 OTD (tax is 9.5% in WA) and so far no bite, I'm wondering if that's too low of an offer or is that "doable"?

I'm in the process of buying a fully loaded 2017 Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum in Cincinnati, OH. I have a proposal of...

    MSRP: 49,017
    Estimated Invoice: 46,017
    Proposed Selling Price: 44,419

The price seems to be below average per True Car and is under invoice so wondering what kind of incentives Toyota may be offering dealerships and therefore if I have any additional room to negotiate?

    Is this a good quote?
  • @sancha00, I'm seeing the average discount about $2,600 off MSRP in your area. It looks like you're getting about $4,468. I would say it looks like you're getting a good deal. I'm not a fan of the doc fee of $499 but the average doc fee is $415 in CT. I think overall, you are getting a great deal at this moment in time.
  • @emily_manning, that looks like a great deal! From the information I have access to, there are no incentives/rebates (including dealer cash) on the 17 Highlanders. I'm guess it could be one of their older Highlanders they have on the lot. The Platinum is getting up there in price and might be out of budget for a lot of Highlander shoppers. Either way, looks like a good deal with the average discount in Cincinnati being about $2,575 off MSRP on the Platinum

Just used the costco program to get an offer for a 2017 LE Plus AWD in Columbus, OH:

This is for a 12/36 lease:

    $38,124 MSRP
    $3,278 Discount
    $34,845 Adjusted Price
$35,208 total with taxes and fees

    15k/36 lease with a MF of .00133:

    $38,124 MSRP
    $2,813 Discount
    $35,310 Adjusted Price
$35,670 total with taxes and fees

Are these a fair offers or is there more room to work with?

Hi, used both the TrueCar and Costco to get quotes on a white 2017 Highlander FWD Limited Platinum in the Raleigh, NC area. The Costco was the better quote:
    Estimated Pricing*
    MSRP
    Base $46,260.00
    Options $395.00 (white paint upcharge)
Manuf. Delv, Proc, & Hndlg $970.00
    Total $47,625.00

My price: $43,925 plus $650 dealer doc fee + tax + tags

I have gotten another non-Costco dealer to go down to 43525 for a non-white, which works out about the same.

We're comparing this to a loaded Sorento, which has a much better deal off MSRP. Should I hold out for a better price on the Highlander?

Anyone getting better than $37,500 in philly area on XLE AWD?  XLE Hybrid $39,000 so far also. I'm trying Costco pricing tomorrow.

    2017 Highlander XLE AWD
    MSRP - $41584(include special color $395, Floor Liners/Cargo Liners $249)
    Sale Price - $38000
    Tax Fee - $4011.15

I started researching the price yesterday and this forum gave me pretty good idea on what I should ask for. What I got may not be the best price in the area, but it seems acceptable. I found it is very helpful to take a snapshot of the good deals in same area that people post here and show to the dealer.

Just purchased a Highlander LE (AWD V6) yesterday in Buffalo, NY.

    MSRP was 35,558
Price with no options 30,977 before taxes.
I added in the roof rack for 350
Total before taxes 31,325. (NYS Taxes are 8.75, which is pretty depressing, lol)

No trade in, and I financed through my bank, so I feel like i did pretty well here.

Sweet price. Weirdly dealers in Charlotte NC are not willing to reduce prices. Most I spoke are giving lease quotes on MSRP. Were any lease incentives applied?
