Transmission issue

I have a 2003 GMC, Yukon XL 1500, 2wd, flex fuel.... as far as the transmission im having a hell of a time finding anything saying what type it actually is. i have deduced upon massive amounts of research that the most common i this year is a 4L60E and the bolt pattern on the pan matches to this as well . I looked up by my VIN and the TIN as well..... and nothing. i cant get anything to come up with any of these numbers and its quite irritating. Anyway the issue is i have never had any issue with my transmission until now. i was driving to work and out of no where the truck shifted out of gear and my RPM jumped and the motor started winding and i had to pull over. i then checked and as i shifted into reverse 1st 2nd and 3rd and 4th i got nothing. no gears work at all. also while idling the motor makes a winding sound now. i want to know if anybody has had this issue and if this is normal. and does anybody know if a rebuild kit will fix this for me or if its something else. i dont know whats up here its never done anything and now nothing. It is odd to me that there was no signs like a certain gear going out or slipping first or anything. please can someone point me in the right direction or give me some info on any of this please help. anything will help..... i have the ability to rebuild it with a rebuild kit but i dont want to have to by one of those and do all that if its just like a solenoid or something. everything i read says if something goes out i should still have like reverse or at least 1st, but i have nothing and i dont understand why. please if someone can help
