AWD problem

My 2007 Santa Fe lost its rear wheel drive suddenly. It appears that the driveshaft is not connected to the transfer case (detached it at the rear differential and found it not connected to transfer case). The dealer says it is the solenoid on the rear diff that is broken and that there is not viscous coupling on this model. If the rear solenoid is broken, why does the drive shaft not engage with anything in the transfer case? Hard to believe there is no viscous coupling, but information is very hard to find about this. If the problem is in the transfer case up front, putting in a new solenoid clutch would not make any sense. Does anyone understand this system? They want to charge $1600 for the new solenoid clutch...

    I think the dealer is right. The system is controlled by a multi-disc clutch.

    Your system is called, I believe, the BorgWarner TorqTransfer System ITM-I (interactive torque management I).
