2001 Subaru Legacy tail light problem

My 2001 subaru legacy station wagon left tail light is on when the brakes are not applied, but when I apply the brakes the left tail light goes out. Why is this happening? I have the headlights on and all of the other lights are working fine.

    Could be a bad connection/socket/bulb in the left tail light. Since it happens when the lights are on, stepping on the brakes and the resulting increased amperage draw could be making this show up.

    Electrical gremlins can be elusive, but I think I'd start there.
