"What's that car made of?"
Yesterday, my wife decided to stop at a red light while the driver behind her in a nissan altima decided to run the light (despite the volt being stopped in front of them). Their car did not survive. Our car came away with a cracked bumper. The police and firemen that arrived were surprised at how one-sided the damage was. "What's that car made of?" they asked. Then they saw one of the steel beams that runs parallel to the length of the car showing through behind the cracked bumper. They had been wondering how a volt would hold up in an accident; now they know.
It's good to know that the volt is built like a tank--at least the part surrounding the battery. I'm sure the front part would crumple like it's supposed to.
Unfortunately, my wife now has whiplash pretty bad. The two kids in rear-facing car seats seem to be fine after a checkup, but the car seats needed to be replaced.
