Calling Los Angeles-based car shoppers: Have you recently traded in (or plan to trade in) a car with negative equity (i.e. the amount you owe on your auto loan is greater than the car's value)? A reporter would like to speak with you; please reach out to PR@Edmunds.com by 11/6 for details.
Car Buying Advice - Buying before/after moving from NY to MA
I currently live in NYC and do not have a car. I am moving to Boston in the next month and will be buying a car (likely a '14/'15 Grand Cherokee) as part of that move (to have in Boston). My question is what are my options in terms of buying in the NYC area over the next couple of weeks before moving vs. buying in MA once I move?
I am thinking of everything from registration/sales tax/insurance/address change/etc. The one wrinkle is that my in-laws live in MA, so I could potentially buy in the NYC area now and use their address as my own (I may not have a place in Boston for another month or two will end up staying at the in-laws during that time, so will in fact be living there).
The reason that I am even considering buying in the NYC area is that the Jeeps are $3+k cheaper in the area vs. w/in a 100 mile radius of Boston - $22-23k vs. $25-26k for Limiteds with under ~30k miles. Not as important, but I could also use it to make the actual move instead of renting an SUV/van as I plan to do (I'm not moving furniture, just personal belongings).
I'm asking more around the logistics of is it even possible to buy in NY/NJ now, register/insure to my in-laws address in MA for the interim, and then change address once I secure housing in Boston? And then from a cost perspective, will I have to pay sales tax twice (and any other additional double costs that I should be thinking of)?
Thanks much in advance.

Before you get the permit you will need:
a completed In-Transit Permit / Title Application (MV-82ITP)
proof of ownership 1
proof of identity 2
payment for in-transit permit fee 3
proof of insurance 4
But I"m not the NY DMV, so check with them about all this. Short Answer? Yes you can do this.
The question is, is the money you save worth the time you will spend to get it done this way?
