I am looking to purchase a used X5 but trying to determine whether the differences between the 2014-2017 model years. I have tried to see the differences based on Edmunds yearly reviews but it doesnt really tell me if I would be a lot better off with a 2016 over a 2015 for example.

Any guidance or suggestions anyone has would be much appreciated.

Also, gas vs the diesel? Is the 35D just as reliable as the gas 35i? I would like the fuel efficiency of the diesel if is worth it.

Thanks for any feedback!

BMW diesel reliability has been a bit hit or miss, although I don't have any personal experience with the N57D motor used in the current generation X5. I can check with some people who do know, but it will take a couple of days.

Be aware that the X5 is a nice cruiser but it really isn't as entertaining a drive as an M Sport X3 or X4 M40i. As for differences between years, the main differences are the composition of the option packages and the iDrive generation. IIRC, the 2104 and 2015 models got iDrive 4.2, which included a touchpad on the control knob. Later cars got iDrive 5.0, which has a tile based menu and a touchscreen. I'd definitely want H-K audio and the multi- contour seats. M Sport gets you a nice set of wheels and a sharp steering wheel, but no performance enhancements.

Me, I'd buy the newest and best equipped model I could afford- preferably a CPO.

Ditto---buy low miles, buy warranty, buy newest year you can afford on a vehicle like this.

Calling @breld - he owned an X5 diesel briefly. Hopefully, he'll be along and offer his thoughts.
