2007 Jeep Compass speedometer??

My speedometer does not come on until I'm driving down the road and then my brake warning light comes on and the doors lock the speedometer starts working. Any idea why this is happening? I also have my 4x4 caution light come on shortly after I start my jeep 07 compass 2.4 l.

That's a lot of interconnected stuff, so I googled "speedometer doesn't work until doors lock" to see where that would take me. Ran into people having the same issue (with ABS lights coming on as well) on different makes of vehicle, and it looks like it may be caused by a bad rear speed sensor.

I'm seeing enough references to it that I think it would be a good place to start!
