Regarding the engine start button, it may be that way partially due to the possibility it could be removable. This is based on the Mercedes GLA, & in some (not sure if all) MB's this switch actually can be removed. It's the silver button itself that is removable, & it simply fits into a conventional key fob slot in the dash. I've had push button ignition on my past two C classes, & I always remove the button & put it in my center console. I then use the key fob inserted into the dash & turn on the car. I do this because I usually fire up the car first before getting in, then go back around to the trunk & load up my work stuff, etc. That's hard to do with the push button because you have to have your foot on the brake for it work. So I don't feel like doing an awkward balancing act on one foot, pushing the brake with the other, & leaning in to hit the button. With the fob, I can just lean in & turn it to fire up the car. Strange yes, but that's the way I like to do it. Another reason I don't use the push button is I don't want to keep the bulky keyring in my pocket while driving (I've never locked myself out of a car, so I'm not worried about that, either). I also don't keep my wallet & cell phone in my pockets.
