If it's that slow, can you run over to the BMW dealer and check out their '06 CPO X3? It's a white one, with the sport package and only 18K miles.... ;)

The lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are on the downslide here in New England. So, a quick story with cars that were purchased sort of involved... Just because I haven't posted much in a while:

After dinner, the wife took the family out to a local Dairy Bar for ice cream. We sat on a bench, them enjoying their "kiddie" sized cones while I gorged myself on a large cup (tub?). Props, it was indeed LARGE!

They sat facing the cows, not I. Too much like looking into a mirror for me, I faced the parking lot/road. Better to check out the cars. As I was scanning the lot, I noted from the left side of the building, a black Audi Q7 slowly entering. As it revealed itself, I immediately flashed to the opening sequence of Star Wars as we watch the underside of the Imperial Battleship filling the screen.

Yes, it was that scary/imposing! Darth Audi!

Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream. Five scoops, easy. I could do it again. Hello, cows!

    Oh, my favorite too!!!!!!

And, I saw a Buick Enclave today and I thought the same. (Yes, it was that scary/imposing! Darth Audi! ) What was that guy thinking when he bought that?

I got news for you ky.
All credit unions are going the way of the FICO score and credit history. You still have to qualify for the lowest rate. It's not like in the old days where it was a blanket rate for every one regardless of credit score.

    APR as low as*
New Vehicle up to 36 mos. 3.75%
    37 to 72 mos. 5.25%
    73 to 84 mos. 6.75%
    85 to 96 mos. 7.25%
    —
    —
$30,000 minimum amount financed over 84 months.

*Rates are based on an evaluation of credit history, so your rate may differ.

This is right off my credit union's page link title (NFCU)

One thing you guys and gals must remember, you too iontrap. Tier rates were modified a few years ago. So anyone that had a 700+ score was considered a tier 1 player. No more. Now a tier 1 + player is anyone 719 or above IIRC, which in effect is now a tier 1. So you are still considered a tier 1 player but with the new rating scales you don't qualify for the tier 1 + rate. Here's an example. I'll do it in braille also so our friend down in NC can read it too!

    From Scion website:

    Zone 1+ (FICO 720+) 60 Months 5.64%
    Zone 1 (FICO 719 - 690) 60 Months 5.94%
    Zone 2 (FICO 689 - 670) 60 Months 7.09%
    Zone 3 (FICO 669 - 650) 60 Months 8.54%
    Zone 4 (FICO 649 - 630) 60 Months 10.29%
    Zone 5 (FICO 629 - 610) 60 Months 13.05%
    Zone 6 (FICO 609 - 580) 60 Months 17.20%
Zone 7 (FICO 579 - 520) Get your own money

Pieri, the lawyer for retiree Russell Battaglia of Buffalo, N.Y., shares a view held by others that vehicle salespeople are using an employee's identity -- on file from an earlier sale -- to give away discounts to customers and close deals. Naah, salespeople wouldn't do that!

"Why wouldn't an unscrupulous salesman do that?" Pieri said. Bingo!

Joe Serra, a dealer who sells a variety of brands including GM vehicles and is a former president of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association, said he has never heard of another dealer or salesperson using an employee's discount without permission. Really?

"God, I hope that doesn't happen," he said. "It's just unethical." This guy believes in the tooth fairy. image

I haven't been to work in two weeks. Don't know, but we had lunch today across from a Toyota dealer here in town and the place looked deserted. It was a late lunch, around 2-3pm. After we left I drove by since it's on the way to the restaurant and they didn't look very busy. I could be wrong as I didn't see any sales people on the lot.

I agree VWs are not the most reliable...all I am saying is I have always bought cars on practicality issues. When I reached 60 I feel I have been practical long enough, now I would like to buy what I want. If I had less than $20,000 to spend, I would put VW on my list (probably not Mercury, though that lady is pretty hot).

If you're willing to sacrifice some fuel economy and a few bucks, the 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit is a wonderful little car that boasts a polished interior, comfortable ride, solid German engineering and strong power. It's a hoot to drive, too.

Went to get one of those "free car washes" at the Honda dealer yesterday. It's actually right next door to the Toyota dealer owned by the same guy. The Honda store's car wash was being repaired, so I went next door to the Toyota store to see if I could use theirs.

I go into the store to ask them if I can use their car wash and to get the coupon you need to do it. Sales guy approaches me and asks if I was there to look at cars. He must have been new, because I know most of the people in their store, and I didn't recognize him. The GM spots me and comes over to say "hi".

He said he heard I bought a Honda at their sister store.

GM-"how do you like the Honda?"
GG-"It's only a couple of months old....there's not anything to dislike, so far".
GM-"they're good cars. You shouldn't have any problems."
    GG-"how's biz?"
GM-"how does it look to you? It's a Saturday and we're deader than a doornail. I've got my people going through their rolladex and calling people they've talked to in the last 6 months."
    GG-"how's that working out?"
GM-"well, if nothing else, it keeps them from standing around grumbling about how slow things are. Why are you here? You in the mood to buy something?"
GG-"nope, I'm trying to score a free car wash from you since you're neighbor's is broke".

He goes to the front desk and retrieves a coupon....brings it to me.

    GM-"how's your biz?"
GG-"Well, I was fired about a month ago, so I've got no biz to report on".
    GM-"what happened?"

    I give him the story.

GM-"so, what are you doing now?"
GG-"I'm doing some volunteer work, looking around for my next career move. I'm keeping busy, though."
    GM-"wanna sell cars?"
GG-"thought about it, but I'm not the kind of guy you want. I'm a demanding coot. I don't want to work the hours you guys put in. I want my weekends free. I don't want to work nights. Plus, if I told you what my salary has been over the last 10 years, you'd probably choke."
GM-"what if I can work with you on a schedule that would fit? You know as much about these cars as anyone here. You can do this job and probably be good at it if you put your mind to it. Who knows? You may like it enough to make some good money. You've managed sales staffs before. You know what it takes."
GG-"Thanks for what I consider to be a compliment. Let me chew on that for awhile and get back to you."

    "Zone 6 (FICO 609-580) 60 months 17.20%"

It's like a Catch 22. With a score that bad, the interest rate is so high that you probably couldn't afford the car payment.

I wonder why they don't have a different zone for those with a FICO above 800. That's a pretty big gap between 720+ and 800+.

    Looking at a Sequoia.

Don't tell me someone low balled you at the last Toyota dealership? Man what is this world coming to?

I mean they gave you a price then told you they can't honor it? Like it was a mistake? Was it because you told them you had to check out another Toyota dealership. One that couldn't match the low ball price given to you by that last Toyota dealer?
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Thanks for what I consider to be a compliment.

Hmm I could've sworn Toyota salespeople are referred to as order takers. That being the case I'm not so sure on that compliment part. :P

The internet saleswoman gave me the quote that included the $5k rebate. I asked her if that price was eligible for the 0% financing, she said that she spoke to the desk manager and he said yes. I actually never told her that I was contacting other dealers, she should have known since the request for the quote came from Edmunds. I mentioned my trade, asking for an OTD offer but her internet director replied back saying that he needed to "clarify" their offer, I told him that their offer was very clear and I was ready to make a deal at the agreed upon terms.

Someone over on the Sequoia Price Paid board gave me the name of his salesman from a dealer near Charlotte that gave him $11k off sticker. Maybe I'll geve him a try.

If I do get it published all my Edmund's friends will get an complimentary autographed copy.

That did it…that got me back here. Actually, after I returned from vacation, I’ve been swamped with my consulting work. Nobody picked up the slack while I was gone so I guess they really do need me. They’ll pay dearly for keeping me away from here, I promise.

I hope you consider me a friend so I’m looking forward to the freebee. Heck, I’ll even write the forward for ya. With a perspective from a know-it-all buyer it would be a guaranteed best seller. :)

About that new grandchild you’re going to get, congratulations. I know the feeling. In about 2 weeks we’re going to have our 5 th and it’s going to be a girl. That will be our first one of those. Mrs. jmonroe has been saying for many years now (2 sons and 4 grandsons) “the only way there is going to be a girl in this family is if she’s adopted”!!!

Mack, I hope you don’t mind my using this reply to your post to address some comments directed at me while I was gone.

    1. oldfarmer: Your crack about being afraid you hurt my feelings by calling me a “rich cheapskate”…well, I’ve been called worse by better. Furthermore, I’m not CHEAP. Cheap is when you buy a Hyundai when you really want a Honda/Toyota/Nissan/////// and have the money to buy one. I bought what I wanted, so there. :P

    2. obyone: If all she wanted was a “dinette set” there wouldn’t be a problem. She wants a full fledged “dining room set”. BIG difference (a few hundred bucks vs. mega bucks). Plus, there ain’t a damn thing wrong with the one we have. Sooo, there to you too.

Car thing: I wanted to take a look at the Genesis so while I was out today I go by the dealer and he’s CLOSED. I thought this was a car seller’s weekend, go figure! While in the lot I looked at the inventory. I stopped counting Santa Fe’s at 36, only about 20 Sonata’s and 12 Elantra’s, 4 Azera’s. Of course there wasn’t a Genesis outside.

Why stop there? Look up all the dealers in all 48 contiguous states and ask for a quote. I'm sure you can probably get more than 11k off the sticker. They are tripping over themselves to give these away right now.

You should have asked him for a copy of the pay plan. It still amazes me how many people get into this business without having an idea what they are going to get paid. I'm not saying you would do this, you're far too intelligent for that. But, it is the car biz so be forewarned.
Tell him you want a sign on bonus, weekends off and your own schedule. Since I started working my own schedule I sell more cars and have more time to spend with the family and feel better. :shades:
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I noticed all they have is old stock (2008). Have they stopped making them? I mean all the other vehicles Camry and so on offer 2009 but not on the Sequoia. I didn't check the Tundra but I'm assuming the Tundra and the Landcruiser are all 2008?
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
For those in sales and think you've seen it all. Try selling cars for a year. Your outlook will totally change and you'll learn exactly how much you didn't know about selling.

Plus, there ain’t a damn thing wrong with the one we have.

I seem to be missing something. You state that their isn't anything wrong with what you have and yet she wants a new one. So what's missing? I mean there has to be a reason why she wants one and for what seemingly is quite a while.
  • mackabeemackabee Member Posts: 4,709
I was being sarcastic. Really, how far do you want to drive and then find out they were pulling your leg?

If you do strike a deal with an out of town dealer have them fax you a completed buyer's order with price, tax, title, registration, and doc fee signed by a sales manager, general sales manager, or general manager.
A complete OTD out the door price. That's better than getting price quotes from incompetent internet sales persons that have to "clarify" price quotes already given with their "directors".

I wonder how long it will be after Gustav hits the gulf coast before all sorts of "bargain" cars start appearing on car lots?

Reminds me of the Carfax commercial where you see a car floating in a storm surge while the owner tries to come up with a clever way of selling it without telling you it was flooded.

Any body think we'll see a lot of cars advertised with "Interior recently washed"?
