So all you're saying is that the "price" is the "price" whether you finance or pay cash right? Just give me your best price and don't worry about financing. But if you finance through them they might be able to cut you a better deal knowing they will make up some on the back end. All balances out though.
  • dino001dino001 Member Posts: 6,191
... one is more likely to get a better pice when financing (given of course good credit), as dealerships live also on spreads in financing. Basically, the dealer could discount the car more as they are going to get the money back and more from the loan spread. Unless, of course, they get beaten on that, too ;)

Isn't the price of the car the price of the car, regardless of payment method? I have never heard of a dealer discounting the price of the car if you finance through them. The only thing I have heard of is a dealer offering lower interest rates for well qualified customers, usually in lieu of a discount (rebate, etc.) Wouldn't that (in effect) actually increase the price?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
    Sorry, missed that.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Normally, the price you pay has nothing to do with how you pay for the car.

As an exception, sometimes the car manufactures offer low financing rates OR a dealer incentive. If you opt for one, you lose the other.

That was exactly my point, and Chuck's too, if I read it correctly.

Thanks, isell, for the clarification. I also agree with your other point about low APR OR incentive - you just can't have it both ways. Dealer's deserve to profit, too!

Well, I have seen ads that quote a certain price and the fine print says you have to finance thru them to get that price. Hyundai comes to mind.

Salesman I have bought a car or two from over the years stays pretty busy these days selling new US cars to Canadian residents. Lots of extra paperwork involved, but virtually all of the customers are very happy with the price, and the sales guy moves a lot of units. We're only about 150 miles from the USA/CDN border.

Seems distance from the dealer doesn't matter as much any more - aka Dave Smith in Kellogg. They have customers flying in to Spokane and getting ground shuttled about 100 miles to the dealership! Just to buy a car!

    Cheers!

That may change soon. Did you see what happened on wall street today?

I think ‘houdini’ saw what happened, I know I did. What else explains his interest in looking at cars. Maybe he’s thinking like I am. Keep reading.

Since I put my money into fixed income a few months ago I actually made some money lately. FWIW, I told my sons to do what I did but they said the market always recovers so they stayed put. If that doesn’t sound like fund manager/stock broker talk I don’t know what does. Sure the market recovers, but my philosophy is…”why do you have to take the hit when you see a bad trend and you’re not comfortable about the short term outlook”? I’m not sorry I got out.

Topic thing: With the whipping that the market took yesterday I got an idea. Tell me what you think my chances are.

I’m thinking of telling Mrs. jmonroe that I’m going to take some of the money I saved yesterday by not being in the market and using this money towards the purchase of a new car. If I have to, I’ll tell her she can use some of that same money to buy a couple dining room chairs. Yeah, I think that will work. :D

I've got a couple of funds that are melting away like snow cones under a heat lamp ! It is painful to see hard earned cash disappear like that with nothing to show for it.

So, yes, I like your plan. We all know that cars are a bad investment but with this market they are looking better and better. You can always tell her that if things get really bad you can turn it into a taxi. :)

Thank goodness the bulk of my "estate" is in munis.

The trouble with these fixed income funds is the fact that inflation comes close to what they return. Can you live on that kind of yield?

As a matter of fact yes; at least for the short term. I’ve done it before so I know it works, at least for me, anyway.

Note, I didn’t say I was going to keep it there nor am I advocating trying to “time the market”. I’m not nearly smart enough to do that. The market will recover but I don’t want to have my money there while it’s taking pills to get better.

Kinda like you selling new Hondas, you know there are going to be rough times and you get through it but wouldn’t it be nice if you had another way? Maybe you do, like selling used Hondas.

"Yes a mouse house is like one of those used car lots where you pay $25 a week on the clapped out stove you bought. They are a dying breed no doubt about it and really not a credit to the industry as a whole. "

Smaller buy here, pay here places are dying. But there are lots of larger, corporate BHPH places that are booming. JD Byrider, Drivetime, etc. are all growing. And I bet you start to see much higher growth due stricter lending practices at traditional banks. Lots of people foreclosing and going CH11 that still need cars.

We had sustained high winds of 50-70 mph over a 7 hour period. Lost 20% of limbs and foliage off a 100 year old sugar maple in our backyard., one of which stuck in the roof of our detached garage, the backboard of our basketball goal got blown out, and a downspout got ripped off. Lots of houses in the area have trees on top of them, so could have been a lot worse.

Same here (NW Cincinnati), jipster. My roof was actually blown off. I was sitting watching a football game (if that's what you want to call what the Bengals do). Saw the winds, but no warning. Heard something that resembled a bunch of people walking on my roof. Went outside to take a look. 3/4th of my shingles were gone. Some of the wood underneath went with it. Went to the 2nd floor when I heard some loud whistling and the first floor got real "drafty" all of a sudden. Have new "skylights" in two of my bedrooms and my home office. Roof over my porch was sitting by my chimney (about 20 feet away from where it was supposed to be). Came back inside to see my deck collapse and my grill and deck furniture being tossed into the trees in my back yard.

Just as I went to survey the rest of the house, one of my big oak trees in my back yard split in two and fell on my kitchen and garage.

Fortunately, a neighbor borrowed my Tahoe. So, it wasn't around and remained undamaged. My son was at a friend's house, so he wasn't home with his car. My Accord was in the driveway and unbelievably escaped any damage.

I'm huddled down in a hotel as we speak. I heard that power was restored to my street. Going to "tarp" my house today. Trying to make arrangements to live somewhere...don't know where. Don't think I'm going to be living in my house any time soon.

Craziest thing I ever saw. No rain. Sun was shining. Just 70 MPH winds ripping through homes and throwing trees, mailboxes, lawn furniture, wood,siding.....everything....like a tornado. Only, it wasn't a tornado.

But, as you say. It could be worse. I could have been in Houston, or worse, in Haiti.

    >I was sitting watching a football game (if that's what you want to call what the Bengals do)

They need more money from the citizens and then they'll play better games. :shades:

Glad you and yours survived. We were about 50 miles downwind from where you live and the winds were worse than I've ever seen. Luckily no damage to house other than patio furniture and frustrated wife trying to get everything nailed down. (Did have one shingle tab lifted up I'll have to glue back down. I feel so lucky compared to others all around re wind damage.)

Glad your Accord escaped damage. We were without power for 16 hours. Others are still without power.

Business has to be good for car dealers and tree trimmers from all the damage.

    Sorry to hear that...

I lost a ten year old tree in the front yard... and lost maybe a dozen shingles off the ridge of the roof... All fixed now... We were only without power for about six hours, though I know plenty of people that are still without power..

Of course, I was actually attending the Bengals game, so that's where the real catastrophe occurred... :(

    Thanks!

Couldn't get any tarps until last night. I guess everybody had the same idea as I had.....get some tarps. Tried to put them up last night but ran out of daylight. I live on a cul-de-sac. Assessing the damage on the street, it looks like Kabul. My street and our houses sit on top of a hill. When it's nice, we all have good views.

But, when something like this happens, there's nothing blocking the wind since we sit up so high. Of the 20 or so houses on the street, only two I'd consider unlivable. Of course, one of them is mine. There's a large tree limb resting comfortably in my former bed (glad I wasn't in it when that happened).

Took on some water since the trees busted through some water lines in my house.

City wouldn't let me near the house until they could cap the gas lines to it.

I went to my basement when all hell was breaking loose. Sickening feeling when you hear all the destruction going on above your head.

But again, feeling lucky. I'm alive. Those I care about are in good shape physically. My neighbors who weren't hit as hard have been godsends. They've been watching over my house. Now that they've got power, there's been a bunch of them who have offered food, muscle and cleanup help. I'll see today what I can salvage from what's left.

    Again, thanks for the concern.

Living here in Florida, "most" of us get prepared for this in the spring. We stock up on building supplies such as plywood, tarps, a few extra bundles of shingles, nails, batteries, etc. Plenty of canned food that will last and bottled water. Extra gas for the generator, and last but not least, bullets for looters :) .

Wow, GG. Glad you and yours were unharmed. I'm crying my eyes out with the recent stock market trends, but small peanuts compared to what you've just gone through. Here in New England, we got a good drenching with some high winds, but nothing like what you just endured. Good luck with rebuilding, thoughts will be with you...

Actually, we were effected as we had planned to go to Turks/Caicos later this month! Unfortunately, the resort is currently unavailable, we have vouchers (no refunds!)... Again, small peanuts...

... to all of those affected by the recent storms. I do hope that all of you survive the rebuilding process without too much stress and strain. The worst I've ever had to go through was a new roof due to hail damage .. only cost me about $500 out of pocket, so I can't imagine what a major rebuilding effort will be like.

Too keep this post on topic, will the local car dealers be having sales on 'storm damaged' vehicles?

I know here in Denver, when we get a major hailstorm, many of the dealers will offer the damaged vehicles at pretty good prices - but, they must be taken 'as is'.

Wow, sounds like you got hit pretty hard. Sorry to hear about the damage.

It was a wierd storm though, looking out my window... no rain, sunny skies, wind blowing like crazy. One second the house behind mine would get a long heavier gust of wind, then mine would. Trees were almost bent in half from the wind.

We got our electricity back after only a day. Parents and sister still are without power. Kids have been off school all this week so far. Will probably miss the next two days as well. Reports say a week or two before all power can be restored.

I admit I don't know much if anything about soccer although I was asked to coach it when my sons played many years ago but only because I was a baseball coach back then. So, when the soccer league started, they wanted someone who knew a little about how to handle a group of young athletes.

Myself and many others have mentioned the storms (IKE) that have gone through TX, OH, IN, KY last week.

For the most part, there were days where dealerships had to lock their doors....many times for several days in a row. If I were in the market for a car, and I lived in the affected areas, it would be my guess that now would be the time to go in and make really "skinny" deals as those stores are trying to make up for the days they were forced to shutter their stores.

Moreover, I'd suspect that at least a few cars that they offer for sale may very well suffered some sort of damage. Whether it be minor (cosmetic), or something more serious (broken windshields). Will a dealer "fix" the damage and put the new cars back on the lot as "brand new"? Do they have to disclose that a body panel was reworked? That a new windshield had to be installed?

Just curious if my thinking is right. Any sales people care to comment?

Yeah, you’d think this would be the case but I’d bet those sneaky guys would turn this right around on the buyer and figure they’re more desperate to buy now and they’d hold them up even worse than before.

If the damage is over a certain amount (I think 300,00 but I could be wrong) we have to disclose it.

We can either fix the cars or sell them as is at a discount.

As an example there are a lot of TREES around our store and every spring some cars get damaged by tree sap. The sap can actually etch the point. Usually the damage is minimal but it can definatly show. A lot of people could care less and for those people we knock a few hundred dollars off.

The fussy people will pay more and they will probably park under a tree the next week and have the same thing happen.

BTW, are you getting back to normal with your house damage?
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,120
j....house is unlivable. After tarping it yesterday and inspecting it more closely, you could actually see exactly what needs to be done. The structure wasn't really damaged by the 70 MPH winds. It was the breech of the structure by the trees either hitting the house, or actually the incursion of the debris, that did the damage. That said, once the first incursion occurred, the structure itself was weakened and kind of had a domino affect.

From what I can tell, my shingles were literally "scraped off" my roof by a tree branch flying from across the street. The holes in the structure were caused by trees and limbs that flew or fell through the wooden parts (house is made of brick and wood, externally...the brick held...wood didn't), and on my garage and kitchen. That in turn, broke some of my water lines in the walls, which caused water damage.

So, if it weren't for the trees, I probably would have come away unscathed. Damn trees........

Now, the fight ensues with my insurance company on what they'll cover, how they'll cover it, and coverage of my living expenses while I'm "homeless". If I can get a contractor to start tomorrow (which I can't), I would imagine I'm looking at 4 weeks minimum, to make the house livable. That doesn't even start to cover the replacement of the ruined contents. Then, I have to convince the insurance people that water logged carpet and warped wooden floors (from the water) are not salvageable. Some of my ruined furniture were antiques. You know it's going to be a fight to get them to put a reasonable number on those pieces.

In short, it's going to be an arduous process.

Wish I still had my boat. I could be living in it on the river with most of the amenities of home, right now.

But....hey....the sun's shining. I'm not taking a dirt nap. As long as I'm vertical, anything's possible.

isell....you make a good point. You clean up the cars. Maybe put a bigger discount on them. Put them back up for sale. As you say, they'd probably make a good deal on them. And, then take them home and park them under a tree with a dangling limb.

Well....there is one bright spot. My son and I are staying in one of those "extended stay" hotels. Kind of takes me back to the little apartment I had while in college (only a lot cleaner).
