2004 outback transmission only momentarily engageing

put the car in 4th and it will engage momentarily move forward a little and then only reve the engine. I can move the car by shifting 1,2,3 manually but it will not stay engaged in 4th. now check engine light is on.

    Hard to say without a thorough diagnosis. You may need access to a code reader to see if the TCM is telling you anything. Generally complete slippage is not a good sign, but in any event, be sure to check your transmission fluid level first thing.
