1996 sonoma 4wd 4.3 vprtek engine, won't shift out of second gear and no speedo until I drive 10 miles ,1,2 and reverse are okay  then it finally shifts normally and the speedometer works again.

Have you checked for trouble codes? One suspect is the VSS--Vehicle Speed Sensor which is mounted on your transfer case. A trouble code would be helpful.
