Center Panel 'Exhaust redirection' button on 400E

Hello Car enthusiasts,
There is a button on the center panel of the 400E benz that looks like a muffler!! apparently it redirects the exhaust to produce more torque?! it does not seem to do anything!! curious if any of you have an idea what the button is and what it actually does. If I push it in there is no light or any kind to indicate its actually engaged!

Unfortunately, I don't know this specific item. W124 400E was a short run car - model years 1992-93 only, I believe, and I have never driven one.

Are you sure he doesn't have a 2016 E400? That was my guess, based on the discussion tags.

I'd guess that is the button. I wonder if it has any actual performance enhancement?

Not that an exhaust can make a big difference.
