Why would all the lights on the driver's front side of my 2005 Forester stop working?

The Driver's side front lights on my 2005 Subaru Forester just stopped working... all of them, all at once. I checked all of the fuses, they are all good. Could one bad bulb cause all of the lights on any given side to go dark?
I'd like to have some idea before I get fleeced by my mechanic.

    I'd be tempted to trace the wiring back to a main connector, and keep back-probing to look for a live wire in the harness as you work backwards. You can start with a test light to confirm, at the various sockets, that you have indeed lost all power on that side. Never assume anything. If you tested the fuses "visually" that's often not good enough. You might need an ohm meter and a fuse chart. A wiring diagram might prove helpful at some point, to find junctions, and you can often find one here:
