Toyota 4 Runners - high mileage used value?

I found 2 4Runners for sale. One a 1998 SR5 with 225,000 for $6000 and a 2004 Sport Edition with 245,000 for $6500. I have never owner a Toyota but wondering if anyone can shed some light on how long 4Runners tend to last. Thanks

4Runners have a good reputation and you will pay a high "Toyota Tax" to get one, but on the other hand "miles are miles" and all machines have wear and tear over the years.

All I can say is that for those prices, these trucks had better hit one out of the park when you do a pre-purchase inspection on them. The 2004 seems more reasonably priced.

On vehicles this old, each one has to speak for itself. They can't be purchased merely on reputation, so you'll have to dig in and check them out carefully.

Remember, a $6500 truck that needs four tires, an alignment and a muffler is actually a $7500 truck.

At these high mileages I would pay special attention to suspension wear and tear.

Besides the high mileage, age also plays a factor here. You are talking about a 21 year old car and a 15 year old car respectively. Do you plan to use one these as your daily driver or just a "winter beater?" What region of the country are you in. When you hear people talk about cars that are long lasting (durable or bullet proof) they are often speaking of the engine & transmission. Every car still needs tires & brakes. At that age, you have got to figure a lot of rubber gaskets and seals are dry rotting. These cars are going to cost you MORE than $6,000 & $6,500.

Also, those are models that had severe frame rust issues.

On most of them, the rocker panels are crumbling from rust, as well.
