My car leaks oil . It is 21 years old with 180.000 miles. my mechanic said that it is a "can of worms" and if he fixes one leak there will be more and short of replacing the engine, which he does not do, there is nothing that can be done to fix the problem . The cam shafts and valve covers were already replaced. Did not help.

Sometimes coming up with a way to control where it leaks to is a valid solution. Old cookie sheets make for good drip pans. Yeah it is a hassle setting them into place each time you park but it beats having to scrub oil off of the driveway. As far as fixing the leaks, it can be done up to of course replacing the engine. But is that cost really justified on a car this old? A good tech can keep a car going for a long time mechanically speaking, but how is the rest of the car? Here in the rust belt it would probably not be in your best interest to repair.

There is a lot of rust in the car. The exhaust system has a hole next to the resonator. There is more. I estimate that spent an averge of 200 dollars a month on repairs and that is with a geico mechanical maintenace plan where they covered part of the repairs.
