Gen 2 Escape (2008-12) longevity

'09 Escape XLT V6,166K mi, with a failed electronic power steering torque sensor (ie: no power steering). Common problem, with previous recall 14S05 in 2014 reprogramming the PSCM and IC module. Internet search found that Ford is now rejecting the many claims by Escape owners having to replace the steering column assembly CL8Z*3C529*D at a cost of approx $1,500.
My power steering problem started as intermittent, then stopped awhile after a new alternator installed. Now driving a few mos. with no power steering, and planning ahead because power steering is part of the state inspection due soon, and the therefore my Escape won't pass without the $1,500 fix.
Now face the Big Decision for owners of older cars with high miles. The $1,500 repair isn't much less than the Escape is worth, so seek perspective whether it's a good gamble to roll the dice on an '09 Escape with 166K miles, or dump it.
There are reports of transmission failures at higher mileage, especially in 2008, 2009 models, therefore that's a factor to consider. Would appreciate any perspective on that or any other expensive problems with high potential to occur, and what you would decide to do.
This Escape has been maintained. No rear wheel well rust. Recently replaced parts: Alternator and water pump belts, Pass front hub assembly, front brakes, tires, rear shocks, front left sway bar link, rear window hinges (Rust Belt).
Thanks For Your Time!

2010 Escape 2.5l XLT 4WD. Currently have 336K miles. Replaced the engine at 324K. Transmission has been serviced (drain and fill) approximately every 30K. Still going strong. https://forums.edmunds.com/discussion/44956/ford/escape/the-200k-club#latest

cardoc3, thanks for your response -impressive!
My '09 Escape has the V6 and different transmission, therefore your info doesn't directly correlate.
Also, my tranny hasn't been serviced! (apparently approx $3,500 if the tranny goes)
I like my Escape -unfortunately appears there's nothing more current with a V6 that's comparable if I decide I need to replace it.

What transmission does your car have if it's not a 6F35?

I assumed the 4cyl and 6cyl have different transmissions.-apparently incorrect?
    Thanks

FYI for anyone with same issue -quote from local Ford dealer:
    • $1,634.89 P/N CL8Z*3C529*D STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY $1,100 online
    • $158.00 P/N BL8Z3511A STEERING COLUMN HOUSING $82 online
    • $350 LABOR (INSTALL + ALIGNMENT $150)
    • $2,143 Approx Total + tax

Now need to get a quote from independent shop, to see how much cheaper they can do this job.
Interestingly, Ford dealer service rep said this job is unusual. Surprising, considering the number of owners reporting this complaint -no way to determine whether true.

How many reports did you find? For reference consider that the reported sales totals for Escapes, Mariners and Mazda Tributes (same car) for the period is 923,022 vehicles. If you found a thousand reports that on the surface would sound terrible if it isn't put into context that it would represent one car out of 923. Looking up the number of dealers in the US Ford is listed as having nearly 3000, and Mazda approximately 700. Using those numbers only one dealer out of four would have experienced a failure, and that's only "if" the dealer the dealer was involved in the repair since the cars would have been out of warranty the majority of the time by now. So it really shoudn't be surprising, but it would otherwise be difficult to confirm.

Now as far as what it should cost, that's a whole different ball game. What you can buy parts for online has no bearing on what it needs to cost for a shop to do the repair for you. The online prices are do it yourself numbers. If you intend to do it yourself and assume any and all potential warranty liabilities then by all means use those prices to make your decision.

Thank you cardoc3. No intent to DIY: included online prices for anyone considering that.
The many online references to Escape torque sensor failure requiring $$$ steering column replacement indicate to me that it's "common enough", especially considering that many Escape owners who experience the problem probably don't post about it.
Regardless, point taken regarding your data. Due to very high cost and out of warranty, independent shops probably do most of these repairs, or the Escapes go to salvage like mine probably will.

I have never had to repair one, never seen one fail. That's one of the funny things about this career though, while I can say that I haven't encountered any, a shop right around the corner could easily have had a completely different experience. If/when(?) mine does fail I would repair it myself.

    To provide conclusion:
Used steering column installed by independent shop for total cost $500, with 90-day full warranty.
(vs the quoted $2,143 + tax quoted by Ford dealer)
Passed inspection, good for another year.
While it was in the shop, they said another person showed up with same failed power steering on an Escape.

Hello, I have a 2008 escape Limited Edition, V6, 4WD, with 192k miles on it. I just flushed the transmission fluid, changed the PTU fluid, and topped of the rear diff. Everything seems to be running well; the engine is very clean inside with no sludge build-up, wearing, rattling, etc. I want to do some basic power upgrades to it, but I don't want to blow the engine. How much power can I get away with without destroying my escape? Also, how do y'all recommend to get more power without spending a fortune or heavily modifying it?

No answer for post above that I was just alerted to-
But since I'm here, an update to my last post above (Jan 2020) on my new/used steering column:
No issues over 2yrs later. Nice.
