door lock problems

I bought a used 2014 Rogue , came with 1 remote (3button switchblade key). The remote locked/unlocked the door but the key would not. I felt vulnerable should the remote battery die or the remote get accidently locked in the vehicle. My hopeful solution: get the door lock to function with a key. After removing the inside door panel I discovered that the 'door lock operating rod' was missing. Easy fix, I thought. I installed the missing rod. Yeah! BUT NOW THE REMOTE DOESN'T FUNCTION!
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS TO GET BOTH THE REMOTE AND KEY WORKING AT THE SAME TIME?
