sometimes 99 Chevy Tracker won't start

The problem I have is that my Tracker sometimes won't start. So far it has always started by the 4th or 5th turn of the key but I fear it will fail to start at all one day.
I recently replaced the Starter so am pretty sure it's not that. It's a new one, not used and works fine when it works.
What happens is I turn the key and get nothing happening at all like every 4th or 5th time I go to start the car; sporadically. Then it may start on the 2nd turn of the key or the 3rd or 4th...
So I go to start the car, turn the key and - NOTHING. Does not make a rrrr-rrr noise or anything at all. No click like a dead battery. Fairly new battery too.
So someone told me it might be a part (here in Central America they call it an "automatico") which fires up the engine then cuts it off with the start of the engine. I'm not even sure that's a thing; it's what a friend here explained to me.
(in Spanish so maybe I didn't even understand completely. I do know he said it was called an "automatico" here.) I inquired about just buying the part and changing it out and the parts store said, no you have to take it out and bring it in. (??!)
My questions are:
1) What MIGHT it be and how to troubleshoot it?
2) Is it possible that spraying some WD40 or silicon or ? into the ignition switch hole might help? Might it be simply a contact problem of the ignition where the key goes in? Somewhere I think I heard of someone saying WD40 can help electrical connections...?
Obviously I'm not a mechanic! I know a little about cars, not that much.
This is a 1999 Chevy 4 wheel drive Tracker. I know sometimes they put Suzuki parts in it.
