Bought 2012 Focus, didn't know about transmission issues. Fixes?

So my bf just bought a 2012 Focus (just over 100k miles, from a dealer, for $6k) without researching the past transmission issues. Currently it seems to be running just fine - maybe a tiny amount of of hesitating in lower gears, but definitely far better than either of our last two cars (his 1990 Ford Escape, and my manual 1990 Volvo 240).
Should he take it somewhere to get looked at? And if there's a "fix", how much would said "fix" cost? Ford dealers near me refuse to give quotes until they've already worked on the car -_-
