So armed with the above information and numbers from leasehackr, I approached a dealer to get a quote. They offered me ~3k below MSRP on a 2024 Kia EV6 Wind RWD with Wind Tech Package (~$48525). When I plug all the numbers into leasehackr it seems like my monthly payment should be around ~$474 if I put $2k down. They quoted me a monthly payment of $560 because of "tax, title, and DMV fees". It still seems kind of high though...

DMV in CA is about 1.1% of MSRP. $550?
$85 doc fee
Upfront sales tax on the incentives. 9% rate? $675
Tax on the payment: $45/mo?

Pretty easy to get another $80/mo for all those items.

But, they should be able to lay it all out for you, so you can see exactly where the money is going.

Yes they said the finance team would when I come in and sit down with them. But I'm wary of going into a dealership and sitting down with the finance team before I've agreed to a purchase price. But I guess it's good to know that the numbers at least make sense. Does it look like a good deal?

When you look at the lease deal with the finance team, confirm the selling price is the discounted price that you were quoted, there are no extra BS fees or add ons and the money factor isn't marked up.

When shopping around for a good lease deal, you simply need to compare the selling price of the same trim/options at different dealers plus all their fees which can eat into the discount. Also, make sure that none of them are adding on any mandatory accessories or protection plans. If you going to try and take the simple approach and simply compare monthly payment amounts between dealers then the amount due at signing in each quote needs to be identical because if they're not then you're not doing an apples to apples comparison. Obviously the more you pay at signing will lower the monthly payment so that's why they need to be the same when comparing deals. Ideally you should only pay the first payment at signing because you risk losing any down payment money in a lease.

It's calculated as the tax against the sum of the payments, and due to a quirk in the law, if you add the tax to the cap cost, it gets taxed again.

I'm a NY state resident and I've been debating with my next lease if I will pay the sales tax up front or not because of that quirk with paying sales tax on the sales tax when you roll it into the lease payment which a lot of people aren't aware of. In NY you also have to pay sales tax on any incentives so you have to pay sales tax $7500 lease cash.

Paying sales tax on the incentives is true anywhere there is a sales tax, not just NY.

So, buy an EV in Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire or Oregon and skip that step.

Oh, and NJ waives the sales tax on EVs - a friend of mine just leased an MB EQE there.
