Since ultimately I want to buy one but have to lease to get the $4500 credit, isn’t the shorter lease going to save me $$$ if I can buy asap and finance at better rates than the lease MF which locks me in for 3 years at about 8% right now.. Thanks.

If you really want to own it, not sure it's worth leasing. The difference between accumulated finance charges between two and three years isn't worth worrying about. Especially, since you don't know what interest rate you'll get on a used car in 2/3 years.

The finance charges on the lease will be $250+/month, most likely, and you'll have a $650 lease acquisition fee. It might not be worth the $4500 incentive to lease first.

Of course, a lot of that depends on your finances, and ability to make a large down payment on a purchase.

Most people that lease to own, to take advantage of the big rebate, are buying out the lease within a few months.

Thanks for the info. I thought there was a requirement to keep the lease a certain period for the tax credit but can’t find reference to that now. I’d be happy to buy at reasonable finance rates but even with top tier credit don’t see any new car rates below 7.5%. My gut tells me that next year it’ll be around 5%. Toyota is stingy with rate subsidies.

Any idea why the Edmunds lease calculator always produces lower payments for the same numbers as dealer calculations in NY? I think it properly taxes incentives (like the $4500 on prime) but there may be some different way of calculating how things are applied in NY. Would it be advantageous to pay taxes and fees directly up front with cash vs capitalizing everything and then reducing the cap cost with up front cash?

NYS has a quirk with sales tax, that makes it a little lower if you pay it upfront, rather than rolling it into the CAP cost. Non-taxable fees should be paid upfront, as well.

Other than that, can't speak to the calculator, or it's accuracy.

Hi, everyone, it’s update time on a leasing question we asked previously. We want to do this for your shopping information, but especially our patient Forum guides who help us get the right $$ and % before we talk to dealers.

We picked up our 2024 Toyota Prius Prime XSE this past Monday. Our lease is as Michaell quoted (36/15, .0335 AKA stupid money factor, $4500 lease cash). We also got $500 back from NYS, $500 back from dealer, and $500 b/c husband is a veteran, so $6K in incentives/cash all together. It was a no-muss, no-fuss transaction done thru phone calls, emails and texts with New Country Toyota of Clifton Park, NY.

Listen to Michaell especially about keeping your Prime lease for at least 90 days, then buying out your lease if you want to at a better bank rate (better as in 8% vs 5% at our local credit union). Even NYTCP told us that was a good idea.

for 36/10 and 36/12 for 17003? I know I live in an area that doesn't get Primes, but the nearest dealer that carries one is at 21117. Not sure if that makes a difference in the MF.
