Hello guys,
a friend of mine thought he found the perfect used car.
It looked great. Low mileage. The seller swore it had never been in an accident.
Two months later the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree. The mechanic did not hesitate.
and told us that this car was in a major accident and it was fixed just enough to sell.

So I'm wondering does anybody recommend some good Online Car history / background checkers ? idc if it's paid or free i just want in depth results because i can't deal with a situation like this again...

Hi - I'm answering this question assuming your post is in good faith, and not just a set-up post for someone to come along and promote a service (spam).

This is pretty easy, and I'm not sure why your friend didn't know about the popular resources such as CarFax and AutoCheck, but when you're spending good money on a used car, buying one or both of those reports is your best bet. Any other history checkers are likely to be scams or less reliable.

You should also consider hiring an independent mechanic (not one associated with the dealership, if you're buying from there) to do a pre-purchase inspection. You can also ask the seller where the vehicle was serviced, and ask for service reports.

We don't allow links to products or services here, and the advice I just offered is the advice you're going to get from major websites offering buying advice.

same thing happened to a buddy of mine with a Camry. looked perfect, carfax was clean, turned out the whole front end had been redone after a wreck. the shop just never reported it.

i use a combo now. i still run a vin report but i also started using this app called CarXray that does AI photo analysis on top of the history check. you take pics of the car and it flags repaints and body damage that you cant see with your eyes. caught a color mismatch on a quarter panel last month that saved me from a bad buy. its like $15 on the app store which is way less than carfax and you get the vin history too.

but honestly nothing replaces getting under the car and checking for frame damage yourself or having a mechanic do a PPI. the vin reports just give you the paper trail, they cant tell you whats actually going on with the car right now.

had the same situation with a friend's car last year. looked perfect but turned out the whole rear quarter was repainted after an accident that never showed on carfax. now i always run the VIN through a report AND check photos separately. been using an app called CarXray lately, you can find it on the app store. does the normal vin history stuff but also has AI that checks your photos for repaints and body damage. caught a color mismatch on a civic i was looking at that i never would have seen. costs like $15 vs almost $45 for carfax which is nice when you're checking multiple cars
