Chevy HHR Interior Problems

This will be my last post on this group....yesterday, my wife took hold of the passenger door handle and it broke, leaving her stuck in the car. She had to lower the window to open the door, which was painful to her shoulder....

I took the car to the agency and was told the door handle was still $343 plus labor...someone suggested I get rid of the car. I though to my self; "self, this ******* will soon be out of extended warranty...and then I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THE NEXT NEW HEAD. Ain't gonna happen." Immediately the agency put me with a salesman, and I bought a used Subaru Outback. They are now the proud owners of an HHR, and I have an "Outback" that has metal door handles and that good old pancake opposed engine that got me 346,000 miles in my Subaru Loyale (without ever, EVER braking a door handle).

I received a message from some Chevy Rep asking me for the VIN number so they could get involved...why would I even's a piece of plastic JUNK, and it's GONE from my sight. No more neck-aches from looking out of that restricted window, either....

So long folks. Buy America? NOT. That Chevy was made of Chinese plastic, and it had an European Transmission *FYI"....Americans aren't making anything any more...,,,just watch"Secret Millionaire" and see our vacant, rusty cities....

Good luck. If I were you, I'd ditch the car ASAP.

What year was your HHR? How long did you owned it?

I bought mine (2010 2LT new) exactly a year ago and no problems yet.
I love the vehicule, fun to drive and economical. Best one since a long time.
Went on a cross country trip last summer, a real joy, crossed the valleys, plains and the Rockies without any problems what so ever a trip of 6,200 miles.
Sorry to hear about your door handle and I've heard of others having the same mishaps with door handles but plastic is plastic.

Good luck with your Subaru...they are nice and good for sure.

wow!!! you wont believe it, but my drivers side door handle broke today as well. i know have to roll down my window before shutting off my wonderful car, open the door from the outside, pull the door shut back enough for me to roll up my window, turn the car off, lock the doors, unlock my door by hand, get out locking the door behind me. (i have to do this locking maneuver so my alarm doesn't go off when i open the doors, and i do not have the remotes anymore because chevy accused me of washing them with my laundry and i can not afford new ones) such a wonderful car!!!!
i too had a chevy rep wanting my vin number wanting to try and see if they could help....but, i'm so done with this car!! it's been nothing but problems after problems. My cat busted making it sound as if i was driving a loud race car and chevy wanted to charge me over a $1,000. to fix the job. well, i took it somewhere else and $50. later, my car doesn't make that loud noise, and i get better gas millage. Chevy also told me when my car had around 30,000miles on it that i needed to get a new clutch (sp?)...well, now that i have over 115,000 on my car....i still have the same clutch.
i got this car back in 2005 and it's a 2006. I was the 1st person in my town to own one...and now i'm wishing that i would have gotten something different.
Also about 6months flooded with heavy rains here where i live and being that i deliver pizza's and trying to get them to peoples' homes' safely and fast ( and even though a lot of them are very poor tippers) i drove my car threw safe water...a couple of inchs. well needless to say, my fan blades broke OFF and when they did, they cracked my radiator. I couldn't just replace the fan blades...OH NO i had to replace the intire thing that holds the fan. That was a pretty little penny!! and then fixing my raditor well, fix a leak stuff fixed it and all that it really cost me was that stuff, waiting a couple days, flushing it out and replacing the fluid.
has anyone else had to replace there powerstearing motor yet? well, i was thankful enough that the colbots had been recalled because of that matter and being that hhr and colbot have the same engine, chevy was nice enough to fix mine for free.
does anyone elses' car shake so bad when you apply the brakes you feel as if you are going to shake to death inside of the car? my car has had this problem for years now and when my car was still under warrenty, chevy told me that i needed new roters....and that my warrenty didn't cover it.
when my sunroof busted and now leaks so beautifully into my car, i was told by the warrenty people that they did NOT cover windows, even though i had the 100,000mile warrenty. so now my car has mold growing in it. THANK YOU CHEVY FOR SUCH A WONDERFUL SAFE CAR! i hope that my children or myself do not get sick from riding in this HHR!
i know that the car was made in mexico....and i'm not being rasicst but, i know my car is made out of mexican tuperware. a bobcat ran out in front of me a few months ago and ripped out my tire well, cracked the heck out of my bumper along with busting my fog light. my car went home crying and the bobcat ran off.
i would drive this thing off a cliff if there was any in florida!!!
  • I love my 2006 drivers handle has only been replaced 3 times now and i haven't paid once...i raise so much hell about my family suing them if i am ever trapped in the car and die...that fix it free.....we really do need to file a class action lawsuit, it is a life jepordizing thing ,not being able to get out of a car in an emergency....anyone know how????????

OMG...I had to replace my brakes and my rotors because the dealership wouldn't fix it because they said it wasn't covered. Needless to say when GM was shutting down dealerships they got cut. Good they sucked.
Yes, the front end vibrates again. I just had it fixed. What the hell is wrong with it no wonder that people hate American made cars, but then Toyota is having troubles too. So what is one to do?

I had trouble with the rubber coming out of the window on the inside..window started to have condensation problems so took it back to the dealer and they had to fix that...I have read some of the owners have had trouble with leaks in their windows. Check that rubber seal. It is covered under the warranty.

BTW, I also had to replace my remote again for the second time. Transmitter inside the remote was corroded....hello? I have 1998 OLDS that has a remote and I have never had any trouble...the car is 13 years old and still going...maybe they were made better back then...

Thanks! Is anybody from GM listening? Kind of doubt it....
  • I just bought a Brand New 2011 HHR LS auto with 11 miles on it and it is already rattle a little bit from the dash with only 142 miles on it. I had a 2010 HHR and it had rattles in it as well and I ended up getting rid of it because 4 dealers could'nt fix it.

This time I would like it done right. I love the car ,but not the rattles. I rented a 2009 HHR LS from Alamo with 33000 miles and it didn't have any rattles or issues. Please heip me, advise me.
  • My HHR has small rattles in it starting to develop at 142 miles and don't know if I should take it back to the dealer and get something else. Please advise!!!
  • The rattles are coming from the steering wheel column and it squeaks a little now. I'm really worried I made the wrong decision.

    Please advise ASAP.

I don't know if yours will do the same but I bought a 2010 HHR 2LT exactly 1 year ago and the first month...rattles like you wouldn't believe.
Rattles from the steering colomn, the dash, the passenger's door panel,, the sunroof and from other places that I could not figure out from where they were coming from. I went to the dealer and talk to my salesman and mechanic about these rattles. They told me that it was new and that they would go away as time passes.
Ya Right! I was so mad, insulted and disapointed by there stupid answers.

You know more rattles. Only small rattling now ans then when driving on rough roads but these are normal I do have to drive on pretty rough roads. They where right...with time they went away. Go Figure!

Sure hope yours will do the same.

i have a 06 hhr LT w/every on it/turbo to. love it. the dealer is suppose to fix those problem if it's still under warranty. the key problem is bad key not cut rigth or bad key cylinder. next rattling in front, most likely broken stabilizer pin, had one replaced before last is squeaking noise, bad strut. don't us gm part, for a few dollars more get performances parts well worth the money. and everyones with wet floor. yep me to. when it rains flood city. bad sun roof design. drainage tube too small and the need constant cleanning. best way to clean is to use air or long wire and push it thought the tube. when cleanning left or right tube the left or right door must be open. the end of the tube exit on the front bottom corner of the door. i clean them 3x a yr.. with terrancal rain or your car is at a upward angle brake out the wet vac. when i know it going to rain hard, cover it up. last but not less for all you hhr haters. i'm a ex-mech, if you treat your car bad a don't take care of it you will have problems, give it a name. all my cars have a name or had a name, they never left me stranded, they broke down but they got me home.ect ...that @##!%*! ford i had. that crap left broke down every where. #2 these mech. now a day? i don't know where they got there skills from. dealer are only mech. are only out to get your money and if you don,t know you are got. i tell everyone to but a repair manual for your vehical so you can look and know what they are talking about.

if you car shakes when you apply your brakes, you need new front brake rotors. all car & trucks do that when you warp your rotors. if you use your brake that heavy it's best you buy heavy duty brakes & rotors. that will take care of that problem. also if you have 17"rims and up it's a must.
even though they are factory rims.
got it been there done it.
  • leah5leah5 Posts: 6
well, i have the 17" rims and wow warp city, never had a problem with driving threw water puddles before. my fiancee had a 1995 chevy camero with 20" rims and NEVER in the two years that we had it, before somene stole the car did we ever have a problem with his rotors warping. so, i don't think it's the tire size. semi's have yet an even bigger tire...and wow, there rotors don't get warped from driving everywhere....but here we are...basically being told that when it rains...leave the hhr at home in the garage/carport or somewhere where it's not going to get wet and either walk, or drive another vehicle.
i'm at my witts end with this car and contacting a lawyer today. hopefully something will get done about these issuses that everyone is having too. :lemon:!!! :lemon:!!! :lemon:!!!
  • we have the same problen with opur hhr 2007 its sad that the care ind would let this hapen and do nothing about it i say boycot chevy!!!!

Check this message and those before and after about a square rubber flap that comes unsealed and allows water into the air intake.

It's under the cowling under the rear edge of the hood. To remove the cowling on my Cobalt, I had to remove the windshield wipers. That means using a puller to lift the wiper arms from the pivot after taking off a nut. Then the cowling comes off with a few plastic snap pins that you pull up. Then you're into the area where the rubber flap can be resealed with silicon or whatever you want to try.

This message is to anyone who is having leaking issues or anything else with the HHRs mine is 2009 only had 4625 miles on it when I bought it I have had it in the shop 5 times in the last 12 months for the water leaking through the ac and down the front firewall and soaking the floor .. this is the second time they have replaced the carpet and this time the fan motor ... mine is still under warranty evidentally they cant fix the probelm .. the Missouri lemon law doesnt apply but the federal lemon law does .. this means I can keep my car warranty intact and GM has to pay me the difference of what I paid minus what I would have paid had I known it had all these issues .. If you have had major problems and lots of repairs they dont all have to be the same issue.. Get ahold of a lemon Lawyer ... I am hoping to recoup enough money to try and trade out of this cause it sounds like there are more issues than I want to deal with with this model...

    Hi Morphoo,
3 weeks ago I opened the driver's inside door. My handle snapped off. Obviously a fault with design and the plastic. Guess what GM wants me to buy a whole door assembly for a measly $550 before installation. This will be my first and last GM product. It runs well, however the suspension is also shot. Once I fix it, (2007) I will happily get rid of it. In 40 years of driving this has not happened once. What can you expect from a Co. that filed for protection under the creditors arrangement act while setting up shop wherever the labor is dirt cheap. They are not loyal to America why should they be shown any loyalty by the people. By the way how did U solve your handle problem short of taking out a mortgage.

I took a woman's hairclip, you know the ones that are metal and flex with an inside piece and outside piece. Well the one I had had a slot down the middle, so I broke it off from the outside piece, drilled a pilot hole on each side of the break to match where the slot was, put in two 1/4" wood screws, and wrapped the whole thing in a 1/4" of epoxy putty. Expoxy putty - the stuff that you get at the hardware store where you cut a piece off and kneed it to a uniform color, just wrapped that around the break and screws, It's been a rock since. IF the whole handle has come off, that means the hinge pin part has broken off also, you may have to "invent" a new way to fix the hinge pin, before you can fix the actual break.

Have you had any brake issues? There is a Technical bulletin out for a "slap guard that is $20 each to keep junk out from the inside of the rotors. Just found that tidbit out from Midas. Also, I just replaced the struts, broke a front left strut plate. Other than that, I like car to keep it a few more years, mileage is great! My commute is 134 miles round trip.

There is an aftermarket replacement handle that can be found at some of the major auto parts stores. It includes the interior handle assembly and instructions how to replace. I believe it is $65-$75. Looks factory, and no need to replace entire door panel.

I am a new owner of an '06 HHR and notice that water drops stain the upholstered seats.
I also am wondering if ALL HHR's are so noisey? The road noise is so loud that I can hardly hear the car radio when at full blast and yes, the windows are closed tight.
Otherwise, I guess the vehicle is okay. I've been driving it since Jan. with no problems. It has approx. 56,000 miles on it. Though I must say, when the AC is on, the engine has no gumption at all.
