Subaru Impreza Cruise Control stopped working

I have an '02 Impreza WRX. The wierd thing is that my cruise control stopped working.

The light on the dash for the cruise control lights up, but when I push the CC lever down, the cruise control does not turn on.

The mechanic I had taken it to could not find the problem.

Regarding the Recall on the cruise control, I thought I had this taken care of a couple of years ago.

Any suggestions?

    Wierd thing is that everything seems to be in good working order, except that the cruise control just does not operate when turned on.
