Scion XB Exterior Repair Issues
I have a 2005 XB. On Tuesday, I lifted the hatchback handle and it fell off. I taped it up, took it to the dealer who said, if it didn't work, it would be covered by warranty, but since it broke, it was not covered. Has anyone else had the handle just fall off? It costs $75 to replace, $85 for labor.

I'll let you know what I come up with. After the second broken handle on my chevy S10 third door I replaced it with a stainless one I made and it was bullet proof after that. Turned out to be one of the selling points on the truck.
The same piece serves as a button for the electric hatch release, a holder for the license plate lights, and a handle to lift the hatchback. It is attached with two pieces of plastic. Oddly enough, when I pulled off the interior cover for the hatch door I see that there are two screws that go through ther metal of the hatch door, but they screw into cheap plastic on the hatch handle.
This is a design flaw. This is among other things a door handle needed to lift the hatch door. After reading this blog, I think I'm going to drill two holes through the plastic piece and put two long screws through the holes in the handle and through the door.
Has anyone had success with a Toyota dealer making good on a free replacement and installation of a new handle?
Our just broke this morning, and I found your post. I called and talked to Caley, and she said based on our customer Loyalty they would reimburse us for the part after we bought it! Awesome!
There is definitely something wrong with this handle. It should be recalled. In all three occasions, my wife (5' 4", 135 lbs.) broke the handle with her "brute strength." Let's face it--the high quality standard of Toyota is a thing of the past.
The fact of the matter is Scion is fully aware of this issue with the back door garnish, the rep acknowledged that, I launched a complaint with the Better Business Bureau shortly after hanging up with Scion, I encourage you all that have had a problem with the latch to do the same, it literally takes 10 minutes! (replaced or not) Perhaps if enough of us Scion owners do it, we will get them replaced or reimbursed for replacing it ourself, perhaps they will come out with a better more reliable part that we can access our trunk space without worry it will break off? I saw a TC with the piece broken off yesterday so it's not just XB's!
Look, the piece is fairly cheap and I could very well buy it and have it replaced, but why should I? I'm sure there are people that can't afford to replace it and still have it taped up on the vehicle or have just taken it off. Scion knows it's a faulty poorly made piece but refuse to help replace most, but replace some and because I do my own maintenace on my vehicle and didn't own a Scion previously I don't 'qualify' to get it replaced? I'm a Scion owner as well, I shouldn't be told I don't qualify!! I called Toyota and they couldn't help me either cause Scion is seperate as is Lexus.
I was also told by the rep at Scion that the piece should not be treated as a handle....HOW ELSE ARE YOU SUPPOSE TO GET INTO THE TRUNK SPACE OF THE CAR??????? I am blown away by they lack of compassion with the matter and the fact a simple letter was not sent out to the owners, which they all have files on if you bought your Scion new, that the piece is faulty and to be careful and not treat it as a handle! I will never buy another SCION the entire rest of my life.....EVER!!!
If any one of you are planning to buy a new Toyota from Cincinnati, OH please let me know. I'm also planning to buy a new Toyota. If go together we will get a good deal.

When I called the dealership...all they could say was Hmmmm.....
Not so sure I can trust the dealership to fix my hatch issue now.
www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls and fill out a complaint form as this reflects on changes. Also type in bulletins and tech orders on data.com as I got a list of ones sent on the Scion XB we owned 2005.
We had the cruise control sticking, the safety belt bolt and problem, four sets of tires before 45 thousand miles and found out factory had put wrong size and wear time was rapid and rim defect
(this is reported complaint by owners also).
My son had his car shut down on highway (reported problem also) and the service engine light came on and could not be shut off we went to get inspected and had to wait for part for three weeks and he got two tickets even though we presented documentation. Steering bolt and some part on a tech bulliten had to be replaced in dash, odometer quit and cost us 1800.
I did this tech bulletin research after we paid this bill and have searched and found consistent problems with:
-seat belts
-back latch-
three windshield replacements and one back with nothing hitting it, long crack showed up overnight and one happened while driving, this is listed in Calf class action suit.
-We got recall letter that after market headlights might have been used and this is a posted recall on the highway safety site for those with headlight problems.
-On Scion Life.Com forum, one owner made a metal replacement fixture that goes around the back license tag and replaces handle and is sturdy aluiminum. These owners upgrade their Scions and have ideas on how to recover your side panels, and have solutions.
-part in dash (sorry don't remember what was altimoter (sp) and it was listed in problems by drivers and on toyota website users-premature air bag deployment when my son hit on brakes suddenly because car in front of him stopped suddenly, air bags did not fill out and no dents on body of car or the one he hit but insurance total lossed the car-when toyota dealership looked under front bumper (cheap) the bumper is held by plastic holders (my word) and extensive damage underneath.
I bought this car for graduation for my son as we owned Toyotas before and thought this would be economical and safe. It is not a safe care with the problems I have done from extensive research. I am not here to knock the car, the fix of the car would be over six thousand dollars even though motor was not damaged.
We would not have parts and work guaranteed since insurance declared it total loss and could not get insurance on it as it would have a salvage title. we would have gotten three thousand seven hundred and putting the extra three thousand would be cheaper than buying another car even though it had 145 thousand on it, we kept maintance up and son drove every day.
I feel our car was cheaply made but attractive to demographics of my sons age and he had audio upgrades. It was an affordable price with mileage that was affordable.
We had owned a Toyota Supra and I expected better interior and exterior fixtures and quality.
The bumpers are cheap plastic, rear door handle broke off, design flaw in windshield (later corrected, verified with internet research) caused us expenses we should not have incurred,
Manual states a certain size tire although chasis is supposed to have different and causes inaccurate information and the load bearing labels are inaccurate on some vechicles.
This car has caused me to lose respect for the life long mission that Toyota reflected in the past of providing quality cars that lasted. I lived in Japan for six years and interfaced with businesses such as Toyota and their philosophy.
I am glad my son was on an access road and not on the highway as no one was injured and the other car received no damage. I had just joined this forum two weeks ago and my son had his wreck two days later and the "blue box" went to the salvage yard in the sky, say a prayer that someone gets some good parts of it as he had a bis sub woofer in the back.
I hope my information helps a member here and I posted in for information only and not to slam the product but I also am not mechanic but am concerned about the brake systems and accelerator locking as this has been a concern with the Pruis and tc and other Toyotas.
I have a dumb question but want to ask the forum, Does the Scion XB have the same braking system of the Pruis, TC, and other toyotas sedans as we had consistent problems with it and the recommendation was to install shim kits in there but dealership just told me "NO PROLEMS" and there were.
If someone knows, I would appreciate the posting. Thanks. BJ
Most Toyota Scion TCs and XBs on the road have taped trunks because of a problem with the trunk hydraulics shocks going out and then trunk handle breaking off and trunk release just hangs which is very dangerous. Why doesn't Toyota take responsibility for inferior design, parts and continues building them the same way?
We started a Facebook PAGE because 4 out of 5 Scion TCs and XBs have tape on the trunk...including us! This is no cheap car....but the plastic parts are.

I have to say that I had luck when I asked to speak to the General Manager. After about a week of my pestering them, all the while my trunk fixture is electicians-taped on, the GM agreed to pay for the part, and I had to pay for the labor. I am thankful that they did the "right" thing, but this handle needs to be redesigned AND Toyota needs to recall all Scions w/ this trunk hatch.
It is a piece of plastic and is the only means by which to open the hatch. There is no "handle".

It has been taped so many times it now looks like [non-permissible content removed]! We called Scion and they plamed me for the problem WHATEVER!
I saw this facebook page with a whole lot people who all have the same problem
It was called - Scion-tC-and-XB-Defective-Trunk-Hatch-Handle
Thats so crazy that there are that many people out there with the same problem!!!
To make a long and unhappy story short: BUYER BEWARE!
Toyota has decided to offer a factory installed BASIC Bluetooth system that only allows calls to come into the vehicle. It does NOT allow you to make calls without picking up your phone and using it either through dialing or speaking to SIRI! So, basically, you get half Bluetooth capability! Since I purchased this car for COMPLETE Bluetooth, I think this situation might have been explained to me BEFORE I purchased the vehicle. Yes, it's on the website-but it says BLUETOOTH CAPABILITY-NOT LIMITED CAPABILITY! Neither is this spelled out in the radio guide book-which of course is available to you anyway-AFTER-you buy the car.
I am also having a problem with the song selection through the Bluetooth; it keeps repeating the songs. The Scion lady told me it's my phone's problem!
After a month of phone calls and wasted time at the Dealership, someone from Scion called last night to let me know if I wanted to make calls out, I had to upgrade to their Premium radio-which costs app $479.00 and has to be installed at the time of purchase!
Scion has offered me $200.00 for my issue. However, when I asked for a radio that delivers what they promised, I was told "Sorry"-no can do. That's up to the Dealer and you"!
So, to all of you who are counting on this as an important safety feature-be warned.
Shame on you Toyota! This will make me think again about buying Toyota cars and hopefully, I have warned other not to as well!
