4x2 4runner sport, trail capable?

I'm looking to get into a 4runner sport, 4x2 model. Living in southern california, I really don't see a ton of trail use, but I do regularly do some hiking, mountain biking and camping that requires getting to a trailhead. I also ski regularly in the winter, so snow use is important too. While I don't think I need a 4x4, I certainly would like a vehicle that'll handle some rougher roads and trails. I was kicking around the idea of the 4runner 4x2 or a something like a subaru outback with AWD, any thoughts on this

If you are going to get a 4Runner, get the 4WD version. You don't want to be driving the 2WD version in snow.

But based on your needs, I think a Subie Outback would have more than enough capability for what you need, it will use a lot less gas than a 4Runner (2WD or 4WD), and be more fun to drive as well.

I've got a 2003 4Runner and I think it is a great truck. But it is a body-on-frame truck and if you don't need one, then get a car.

Based on what you've stated, would be to get a new 2009 Subaru Forester, which should go on sale in April. It's larger than the current Forester, and has the most ground clearance of any Subaru, as well as the best angle of approach/departure and breakover of any Subaru.

It will ride and drive much better than any 4Runner, as well as get better gas mileage.

Just remember if you get the Sport model - it has the X-Reas suspension. It CANNOT be changed for all practical purposes, so you may want to consider the SR5 if you want to ever change the suspension for more off-road needs.
