Jeep Grand Cherokee Rev counter problem

Hi, I have a 1996 Jeep which is running fine, but the rev counter has suddenly gone very erratic, it bounces up and down all the time in a random way. The speedometer has also started reading 0 and then bouncing back up to the speed I'm doing. The 'Check Engine' light also flashes on and off. Any ideas? Thanks.

clean your battery posts sounds as if you are getting spikes in voltage

If you're still having the problem after cleaning the battery posts, go to Autozone (or whatever auto parts chain you're close to) and ask them to put their code reader on your truck and see what it says.
