If you want the options I would go for the loaded V6 w/22K. Either way you'll probably hit the time limit on the warranty before the mileage limit. You won't notice much difference in the mileage but you'll notice those missing options every time you drive it. That assumes everything else is equal. Of course it's your decision and your money. But that's something to think about.
  • saifusaifu Member Posts: 23
akriby you make sense man...so you think i really wont feel the difference in the car whether it has 4000 miles on it or 23000? I have not seen the cars yet but i assumed the 4000mile jaguar would have a really nicely and non-worn interior...well maybe who knows even the 23k mile one may have a great condition too....i agree that the missing options would be missed...but i dont care about premium sound that much since i am thinking of getting a cd/navigation off market installed anyway..i do however want the sunroof and the heated seats..
keep the suggestions coming....you guys are great.
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
Interior wear really depends on the car and how well it was treated, but there is no reason why the interior can't be in perfect condition after 22K miles. If you think about it, lots of short trips (entry and exits) can be more damaging than long highway trips as far as interior goes. Plus 4K is extremely low mileage. If a car is only driven on very short trips the engine doesn't heat up enough to get rid of the moisture and the oil can become contaminated. I would really have it checked out. Seems suspicious to me. Just make sure that if you compromise on something that you can really live without it. Otherwise you'll be looking to trade again very soon.

That with the lowest mileage is usually the least worn. As with yachts, the lower the hours the better, all other considerations being equal.
  • saifusaifu Member Posts: 23
I came across this private person selling a 2001 C320 with everything on it....13K miles and a similar price.what do you guys say?I know mercedes is so much better in many ways not to mention the resale value.....but i find the S-type so much more stylish...what should i do.....your input?
  • cfgrosscfgross Member Posts: 54
Sorry I didn't respond to your previous post earlier. I was in San Diego taking the oral exam for board certification in anesthesiology. Anyway, to answer that question first, I personally would be leery of a 3 year old car with only 4300 miles on it. It is probably fine, but I was burned once in a similar situation. I bought a 1985 Ford Escort (in 1987) with about 5000 miles on it. It looked brand new, had very little mileage, so I thought it was a can't miss. Within 6 months, I was having the carbeurator rebuilt. A few months later, the struts were shot and needed to be replaced. A few months later, I was in a VERY minor fender bender, and while in the shop for repairs (a family friend, and completely credible) I was delivered the bomb that the car had previously been in a MAJOR accident, with all kinds of frame damage that had been repaired, body work, etc. Of course, this was in the days before the internet and CarFax (and I was just out of college and didn't know any better). It was obvious that the reason it was so low mileage was that it had been dumped after being repaired. Of course these days you should be able to trace all of that sort of thing and discover it before buying. Even so, I agree with akirby that in the long run you'd end up happier with the higher mileage car with more equipment.

As far as the C320 - and this is PURELY a personal bias and not based on the merits of the car - I never have and never will own a Mercedes. Besides, I think the S-Type is far more stylish and down right fun to drive. The real question is what do YOU think? It's your $$ and you're the one that will be driving it. Trust your own instincts to pick the car that will fit your tastes the best and make you the happiest.

Be aware that there have been quality problems with the C320. To keep costs down MB farmed out the interior with less than stellar results. Not saying it isn't a good car, but it's not the same as the E class or S class. All things being equal I would go for the S type.
  • saifusaifu Member Posts: 23
I went to this Jaguar dealer today, Lee Jaguar just outside of Boston.Actually the thing with places like that is that you know you are getting a good car but they prices tend me quite a bit higher..none the less what do you guys say i should pay for a 2000 S-type in good condition with less then 25K miles on it?Both for the 3.0 and 4.0....i have checked kelly blue book but im interested in what numbers you guys come up with.......thanks again
  • cfgrosscfgross Member Posts: 54
That 1985 Escort I told you about is the last used car I have purchased. Other than checking the internet sources (Edmunds, KBB etc.) and checking listings (private and dealers) I'm afraid that I can't give you much guidance on pricing for a 2000 S-Type. Sorry. :(
  • saifusaifu Member Posts: 23
I drove a C320 with all the options today and iM literally going mad thats how confused i am now......i cant seem to decide which way to go....the Jaguar or the Mercedes......please someone guide me!!!
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
This is YOUR decision and YOUR money. We can't tell you what to buy. But once you make your decision, NEVER look back.
  • whatupwhatup Member Posts: 26
Both the Mercedes and the Jag are luxurious, but in very different ways.

The Jag is plush, and looks it. Driving the Jag definitely has a certain feel to it. Being 21, it makes me feel like an old man. But that car has clout and presence. You look good in it.

The Mercedes is luxurious, in a functional way. There are no frivolties in the C320...nothing is for show. And Mercedes are possibly the best highway cruisers out there. The C320 also has more safety features than the 2000 S-Type, including ESP (electronic stability program) and 8 airbags (2 front, 4 side, and window curtains). Yes, there have been (minor) quality problems with the C-Class, but this is just more teething issues related to a new model. Go to www.mbworld.org for more information. It's a great forum.

I personally can't get past the interior of the pre-2003 S-Type. But both are solid cars...it's a tough choice.

So tell us, have you made a decision yet?

I think i will go for the C320...i am getting a great deal plus the car is newer with literally ever option except navigation. The drive of the C320 is also very good...i love the shape of the S-type and no one in my school has the S-type(its full of BMW's and Mercs)..but i guess this C320 is to good to let go of..
i do appreciate everyones great input on this forum..thanks alot.

Actually there has been a major change since my last post here. The guy with the C320 sold it to someone else by the time i received the money from my dad.I was devastated when i got the news and i was hung on the C320 and i checked a few dealers for them. They were asking for more money for cars with fewer options and i realised it would be better for me to look for S-types again. After serious negotiations i put down a deposit today on a 2000 S-type V8, Black on Black, every option inc. heated seats and Navigation. The car has 28K miles on it and is in very good condition. The price they wanted originally was $35K but i got it down to $31,600. What do you guys think?? Is it an OK deal...good deal or i could have done better? I would really really want to hear from you this time specially since i have already put down a deposit

worth from a Lincoln LS owner: I don't know anything about Jag resale but, if the car has been well-cared for, you're getting 80% or so of it's useful life for less than 60% of it's new price. A loaded '00 S-type 4.0 stickered for something like $54k, IIRC. Which is why I bought the Lincoln. :)

As I said previously, I'm far from an expert on used car prices/values. With that caveat in mind, from what I found after briefly checking around on the web, if all is as described and the car has no "issues", it seems like a decent deal. Don't forget to get a title report from CarFax, and the service history from Jaguar. If your dealer is not a Jag dealer, take the VIN to any Jag dealer and they should be able to pull the info off the computer for you. They will also be able to tell you what date the factory warranty will expire (it was 50000 miles or 4 years from original delivery). Mileage-wise, you have plenty of warranty left, but depending on the original delivery date (remember, the 2000 was released mid-1999), if this was an early car, there may be only a few months left.

Let us know how you make out, and good luck.

    Craig

PS: You mentioned that you got the money for the car from your Dad. Do you mind my asking how old you are and what you do? Just curious. :)
  • saifusaifu Member Posts: 23
Thanks Craig...actually i checked the car fax myself and it was delivered in June 2000.The dealer is a proper Jaguar dealer here.As for my age,i am 21 and i am a student(Bentley college)... Thank you for the assistance

    An S-Type at Bentley College?

I'm 21 at Cornell University...and you want a Jag S-Type? Come on, it's not a young person's car! My parents drive a 2003 S-Type 3.0...and they're 52! A Jag is not for you. Live your life and be young. Get something stupid. A nice sports car. S2000? Audi TT? Or maybe a big SUV. A Jag?? A parents' car....
  • cfgrosscfgross Member Posts: 54
S-Type, "it's not a young person's car". You're making me feel old! I agree that there probably are few 21 year-olds with S-Types (or other luxury cars for that matter), and most S-Type owners probably fall in the 40-60 age range, but if you like the car and have the means, I say "why the hell not?". It's a super car no matter how old you are.

By the way, I'm 38 and like to delude myself that I'm still a "young person", so please, no more statements that will shatter the fantasy! ;)

In responding to the request for dealership service information for the S-Type in the Washington D.C. area. They all suck. According to the Washington Checkbook Magazine, Laurel Jaguar is suppose to have the best service. I beg to differ. First of all they want to know where you bought your car. If you didn't buy it from them, then you will get an appointment 1 month away. Plus, if you didn't buy it from them, you don't get a free loaner. Jags tells me that is at the descretion of the dealer. Jag frowns on this policy, but has failed to do anything. I have dealt with Rosenthal, Laurel, and Manhattan. They all do inferior work. Laurel and Manhattan has vertually destroy my car. In replacing the clock, Manhattan crack my Navigation screen, damaged the leather on console, spilled chemicals which damaged my seats. Laurel, has broken all of the snaps on the engine cover, scratched my fenders when working on the engine, severly scratch my door handle and housing in fixing the rear door locks. In balancing the wheels scratched all four rims. Now, lets get to the car itself, new engine, two new transmissions, new gearbox, numerous suspension fixes, afraid to park on steep hill, gearbox will lock requiring towing. Jaguar suggest I get and rock the car until the gearbox frees itself, repeated false signals to Jaguar command center informing them my airbag has deployed. Dealer has no idea what is causing it, however, they suggest I replace my Vims Module at a cost of $1,100, which controls the cellphone (auto out of warranty). Meantime, I am a nervious wreck not knowing whether or not the airbag will explode at anytime. World's worst resale value. Need I say more, STAY AWAY FROM JAG. The worst decision I have ever made.
  • whatupwhatup Member Posts: 26
Sorry man. I hope I feel the same down the road.

But there's just something about the Jag. I don't understand why someone my age would choose to get a Jag. I can't explain it. There's just something about it. But if that's what you want, all power to you.

There are at least 4 X-Types buzzing around Cornell, and one kid has a pre-2003 S-Type. At least they distinguish themselves from a sea of 3-Series and A4s.

By the way, this is coming from a kid who drives a 1996 Mercedes-Benz C220. Yeah, I may seem hypocritical, but it was a hand-me-down.
  • vader4vader4 Member Posts: 15
Almost got a 2001 S-type, however the interior has much to be desired, 2003 way better. In the meantime I will get a 2003 X-type drive it a few years then possibly purchase a "used" 2003 or 2004 S-type with vast improved interior Especially the S-type R.

WOW! Times have sure changed from when I was in college (not all THAT long ago!). Most of the people who even had cars had old beaters, or if a newer car a very modest one (Ford Escort, Chevy Cavalier, etc.) I didn't have a car until my senior year, and that was a luxurious 1974 AMC Gremlin with no radio or A/C (or brakes for that matter, but that's another story).

I tooled around campus in a 1974 Ford Pinto baby blue. Upgraded to 79 Volare senior year. This was in 1989 back when UNLV had a basketball team! There was a discussion not too long ago about the nicest Pice of S&*t you drove. I understand where you are coming from. Pre 2003 S-type interior is not much better than the Volare's though, 2003 I love but not for 50K I'd get a 5 series in place of that. Not willing to plunk down $50k on a car however. Was waiting for the CTS but not as impressed as I would think, did not even consider a JAG until I went to check out a 01 5 series at the local lot, saw the X-type and fell in love.
  • wcollinswcollins Member Posts: 45
Save your money. Had an opportunity to drive an X-Type Loaner while my S-Type was in the shop for a week. Not impressed. The ride left much to be desired. Maybe it's because it is a far cry from the ride of the S-Type. However, I have read some auto magazine critics calling it a Trumped Up Ford Taurus. I can believe that. The engine also seem to be straining when pushed. Not a Jag characteristic at all. I guess you would call it a Jag when it grows up to be an S-Type (which leaves a lot to be desired itself). Afterall, it is for the X-Generation.
  • saifusaifu Member Posts: 23
Cfgross and everyone else...i just got my S-type.Its black on black V8 with premium sound and navigation.....i really like the car and i hope it does not give me any problems. And if you are impressed with the cars mentioned by Whatup in Cornell...i dont know what you will think about my school and the other places in Boston. In my school of about 3000 students there are atleast atleast 25 X-5 BMW's(mostly 4.4s)....8 M3's(new ones)...4 Carreras....10-15 CLK430,55 and new 500's....5 or so SC430's...4 C32AMG's..Escalades and ML's...BMW M5s...Dodge Viper and much much more..(not to mention countless 3series,C-classes and Audis and Boxsters).all the international kids here have crazy cars...when i started Bentley in '99 there was a kid from Pakistan who had a F355 Ferrari also...places like BU, Babson and Suffolk are even crazier...
  • whatupwhatup Member Posts: 26
    Congrats with your S-Type.

I was home for the weekend, and I got to drive the Jag. I love the way the car drives...it's almost suprising how something so plush can be driven so hard without complaint. The cat can move.

But there are some quality issues. The dashboard squeaks and rattles constantly, worse than our 1998 ML320 ever rattled (that tells you something). And the chrome trime around the rear passenger-side window is falling off. Oh well, they're just minor issues the dealer will have to see about. But all in all, one hell of a good-looking car.
  • cfgrosscfgross Member Posts: 54
Congrats. You won't be disappointed. You say the car is a 2000? The wheels that you have are from a 2002 - I don't think they were available earlier. Any idea why you don't have the original wheels?

    Craig
  • cartesiocartesio Member Posts: 36
In message #421 he says it is a 2003 S-type. Thus the wheels. I am surprised about the noises mentioned.
  • cfgrosscfgross Member Posts: 54
Actually, post 421 is whatup's post about his parent's 2003 3.0. Saifu purchased a 2000 4.0. Besides, those wheels are not the ones on the 2003's, either.

    Craig
  • saifusaifu Member Posts: 23
The pictures are of my car and yes it is a 2000 4.0....i did not know those wheels are the 2002....i must say thats a pleasant surprise. But are you guys sure these were not the wheels for the 2000 sports package being offered in USA??I do love those wheels though..

heres a pic from the front( i have taken all the pics from the dealers site)

  • cfgrosscfgross Member Posts: 54
I'm almost 100% sure that those wheels were not available until 2002. Could be wrong, though. Does your car have the sport package? I didn't realize that the 2000's with sport didn't come with the ugly grey wood that my 2002 had.

    Craig
  • wcollinswcollins Member Posts: 45
Yes, those wheels were available for the 2000 Sport Package. A $1,000 option with 17" wheels. I have them on my 2002 4.0 S-Type.
  • cartesiocartesio Member Posts: 36
The S-type pictured above is definitely not 2003, as is obvious from the missing shield on the grille.

cfg -- I didn't understand that your reference was to saifu, not whatup. Thanx.

    saifu -- It's a beauty!
  • whatupwhatup Member Posts: 26
    Hey,

You can tell this is a 2000 by: (1) no growler on the grille; (2) square side mirrors; (3) no chrome on the bottom edge of the mirrors; and (4) side molding on the side of the car (though this was eliminated in 2001).

My parents have the (squeaky) 2003 S-Type 3.0. By the way, the pre-2003 interior doesn't look half bad in black.
  • whatupwhatup Member Posts: 26
Can you post a picture directly from your hard drive, or do they have to be on the web already?
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
Folks you may NOT use the img src tags to post pictures from other sites unless you actually own the picture.

We welcome *links* to relevant pictures (as long as the host site has no objections), but using the img src tags to display pictures from other sites can expose the Town Hall to serious copyright issues.

I have removed some messages that appear to be displaying pictures that the message poster does not own.

Please feel free to repost using links rather than displaying the actual image.

As always, drop me an email if you have any questions.

    Thanks.
  • whatupwhatup Member Posts: 26
I think all the pics of saifu's Jag that he bought were just erased. And it would have helped if Pat answered my picture question...

Is there any Jag forum that's decent? I hate the way Jagtalk is set up, and this forum is so restrictive. Why can't there be one similar to http://www.mbworld.org ?

  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
    Sorry I missed that.

The Town Hall Help file linked on the left side of this page explains how to display pictures. Again, you may only do that if you actually own the photo.

I hope those who wanted photos to be seen by the members here will post the links so that we can view the photos without any copyright issues.

As always, feel free to email me if you have any questions.

    Thanks.
  • saifusaifu Member Posts: 23
Man i own the Car and you're talking about the pictures.!! i guess i would have some right over them...
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
As I said, if you own the pictures, you may use the img src tags to display them. If I misunderstood, I sincerely apologize and hope you will repost.

If you do not own the pictures, please do a post a link so that others may see them.

Email me if you have further questions.

    Sorry for the disruption.

Drive whatever the heck you want man. I drove a Grand Marquis when I was 16, and loved it so much that, now that I'm 22, I bought another. Don't go telling me I'm too young for a Jaguar!

At least you have the luxury of parting highway traffic from people confusing you for a cop...

Maybe, but I'd still trade the Mercury in for a 4.0 or 4.2 S-Type in a heartbeat if I had the money ;-)
