Check out this link for the 14 most unreliable luxury cars..........
Guess who ain't there ?.................LOL !!!

I posted this on the GM forums but the GM haters will ignore or
    bury it http://biz.yahoo.com/weekend/unreliable_1.html

Looks like many of the "fat cat" units like Mercedes are JUNKS.

There would be more posts for the Deville if GM ever gets off the pot and puts RWD back into the one car that should've never been a FWD. When the biggest generation to ever fill the Deville ranks came into being they were to only find that GM spoiled a fine car with FWD buggy thinking. AWD would have been acceptable with a higher percentage of power to the rear wheels.

How the car is driven is NOT a small issue given the average age of the typical driver. But GM didn't care about that. They heard the FWD was all the rage with the automakers and so they had to make ALL of their models FWD.

This reminds me of the story where a major highway in Arizona got another lane put in, to later be pulled out because the locals didn't want to encourage people to move there, just to be put back in when they did move there.

Your absolutely correct in that the Deville is one of the finest vehicles ever built in all respects. Even the FWD's are fine cars, except the fact they are FWD. Since I won't compromise with a STS version and GM is taking their sweet time in correcting their mistake you won't see the posts your hoping for, for awhile.
  • geo9geo9 Member Posts: 735
For where I live in snow and ice land my FWD DeVille is just fine.

GM is coming thru with new RWDs like the CTS and STS................

Its good to offer a choice to most folks
  • llumpirellumpire Member Posts: 5
FWD or RWD will never be something that will be a choice to the buyer for the same car in the same year. You know that, right?

You also know that when there is a change from FWD to RWD it is highly probable that many models will make the change because its cheaper for them to make the cars and a profit.

Now, you can have a choice between FWD and AWD for some cars because it isn't changing the placement of the engine. The bad news here is that the trend is also toward increasing horsepower which is limited when using FWD engine placements. That will affect overall sales. So, don't expect that to catch on.

So, you might want to hold on to that FWD because they won't be making them for long.

im am going absolutely insane with this problem...not to mention how much money it is bleeding me of...maybe someone knows??

the car runs fine for the first 30 mins or so...then it sputters on excelleration...feels like there is no gas going thru the system...or like its got a clogged fuel filter...except...i have a new fuel filter, and in fact it has had a complete tune up within the last 24 hours trying to solve this problem.

im not sure...but it is possible that the antifreeze is evaporating...seems like there is less in the overflow...but im not certain of that...i will be checking that tonight...however the car doesnt overheat...

now, pep boys sez i have a blown head gasket...but i dont see anything that backs that up...there is no water in the oil, no oil in the water...there is no loss in power...its not blowing anything out the tail pipe...and its not overheating...i think they are nuts.

someone have any ideas??? im going nuts here!

I wish I could offer some specific advice but unable to do that you need to either take it to a Cadillac dealer or to an independent garage that knows the Cadillac auto line. Wish I could offer more specific help. Best wishes and do post what the resolution to your problem is when resolved so we will all be a bit more knowledgeable about our cars.
  • gypsyladygypsylady Member Posts: 4
i will do that. this evening, i took it out for a ride with my brother so he could see/feel what it was doing...but dang if i couldnt get it to do it again! so now i have to wonder if maybe it isnt something in the cooling system, since it runs well when it is cold...and without the sun blaring down on it. however, im still going to try to run it around and get it heated up tomorrow in an attempt to recreate the problem.

there were only two times it did something simular to this...one was when i put mobil gasoline in it (my car only likes to eat chevron) and the other was when i had a bad injector, but then it did it all the time, not just when the car had been driven a bit.

i will let you know what comes of it...thanks!!
  • gypsyladygypsylady Member Posts: 4
yep, its the fuel pump...was causing the whole shabang...making it stall when the gas was low...and making it spit and sputter...

    problem resolved!
  • bremertongbremertong Member Posts: 436
Am very happy that you resolved the problem! Thanks for sharing your experience so if any of us have a similar problem we will have a clue as to the specifics of what to do and check. Best wishes.
  • gypsyladygypsylady Member Posts: 4
this also resolved another problem...when the gas tank would get low, like 50 miles left...it would stall out when i turned right. i think this may be a common thing with that year because i had another one that did the same thing..and my brother in law had 2 that did it.

I noticed that Consumer Reports doesn't recommend the Cadillac Deville and consistently gives it a lower than average rating. How do you Cad Deville owners feel about your experience owning the Deville? Which year since 2000 is the best to own?

A bit difficult to answer your questions in absolute terms. I have owned two Devilles, a 98 and currently a 2004. I have been satisfied with both cars. My main reasons for buying were, power from the Northstar, appearance (my 98 in gold was a real beauty), local dealership in small town. Jaguar, Lexus, and Mercedes do not have dealerships in my community. The Consumer Reports poor rating on the car is a mystery to me, I have read the stated reasons for their low opinion but have not encountered some of the criticisisms they level at Cadillac. Consumers Digest is more favorable to Cadillac. Cadillac could do better on customer service in that they are a little slow to resolve questions and problems. I suspect some of the other luxury makers might have better customer service at the corporate level.
Unless I have significant problems with my 2004 would strongly consider another Cadillac for my next car.
Final thoughts: I like the fact that Chrysler 300C and SRT have strong Hemi engines
and are priced competetively with cadillac. I owned a Chrysler LHS (1997) my main
complaints were under powered and too much cabin noise. I am told that the new Chrysler 300C and SRT have addressed those issues. They are also very attractively styled. Until the Chryslers are on the road for a few years we will have to wait and see regarding the reliability question. Of course if gasoline prices keep going higher we may all be considering hybrids for our next cars. Hope both Cadillac and Chrysler will respond and make hybrids available.

We live near Salt Lake City, UT (higher than average altitude); the regular gasoline is 85 octane, while premium (20 cents higher/gallo) is 91. What has been your experience using regular gasoline with an 85 octane in your Cad Deville? The way prices are going on gas, this could become an issue. One study said in general regular gas works fine with most automobiles and that the premium grade is not necessary. Your thoughts about using regular with a CAD Deville (04 - 05)?

    Thanks,
    Bob

I have an opportunity to buy an 04 Cad Deville with only 20K miles for $21,900. Is this a good deal?

  • sls002sls002 Member Posts: 2,788
My owners manual (2002 Seville Luxury Sedan) states that at least 87 octane fuel should be used. I have tried 85 octane, and it will run on it, but performance seemed reduced. I would use mid-grade if premium is too expensive.
  • geo9geo9 Member Posts: 735
Regular 87 will run fine in your 02. Prem. will make it run a bit faster
    tho.....................

My 96 was a Prem. ONLY model and would run like crap on 87.......
My 03 runs just fine on 87..........................

CONSUMER REPORTS hates just about any American big 3 vehicle !
If its from japan its the BEST is their motto.................

21k for a used 04 is a heck of a deal unless its been wrecked. Check the
title carefully and a good independent shop inspection is a must !!!!!
A GM extended warranty is a must for a used GM car...................
  • bremertongbremertong Member Posts: 436
I don't have the owners manual in front of me but believe it says will run on regular
grade (2004 model), also agree with the comment that it will give slightly better performance with premium grade. I have always used premium grade on my Cadillacs (98 required it) I am planning to check the owners manual and suggest you do the same if you have one or call Cadillac customer service and they will probably have an answer for you. With gas prices headed through the roof it may be time to experiment with a lower grade to save some money.

As mentioned in an earlier post my steering wheel was always sitting a little left of center. I dismissed it as crown of the road. Finally decided to take it in for an alignment check. To my surprise they claimed it needed alignment both front and back. I bought the car with a little under 15000 miles on it and the previous owner
must have done something to cause the car to go out of alignment. Hope perhaps I can save a little on fuel cost now that the car is properly aligned. The wheel now sits on center so they must have done something, cost with tax $ 76.00.
  • geo9geo9 Member Posts: 735
The hosts get a bit testy when you post links to other sites...................

Alignment huh? $76 plus is the going rate now a days. Lucky you don't
have a full size GM truck. They are a major job for a alignment. Some
plugs have to be knocked out etc...etc..........aka $pendy !
Good thing i only keep them 3 winters and trade them................

My Devilles I keep at least 5 years and rarely align them and have never
had any tire wear..........Or have any major/failures or repairs either !
Just a darn quirky cruise control............LOL!!!!!!

Sure enjoy that V-8 power tho and the 25 mpg. avg I get as long as I
keep my foot outta it !!!!! My truck is lucky to get 15 mpg just around
town. But I NEED a full size x-cab to plow snow and tow my caMPER
    and boat...................

Have a great Labor Day all!........................................ :)

of this latest "gas crisis" !
Hes not a motorhead and has no favorite brand so anything that has a auto.
will work for him so gonna give him the Escort......................

The 93 sounds best, but has the 4.9 engine, not a northstar. However, that is not bad. If you are really looking for fuel economy, a Cadillac is not the best idea, but it would do better than a heavy chevy. Used econo cars are probably priced higher than they are worth now. I have noticed that the Eldorado is also commanding a premium price relative to other Cadillacs in the used market.
  • geo9geo9 Member Posts: 735
YEA..........Finding a nice one here in rustland NY is a chore..................
If i had more time to spend at my Daytona home (aka gods waiting room)
I could find quite a few nice late model Caddies !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really want to avoid a n-star esp. if I haven't had it from new...........
The 4.5/4.9 aren't as complicated. Checked service recipts on the 93 and
the guy assured me the sealent tabs were used !
My 90 4.5 180 hp DeVille would smoke the tire up the block and blow the
doors off my buds "fast" 5.0 mustang with the ac on! That thing sipped fuel....................

NY has a new emission snifter test for 96 and up cars along with its
yearly inspection so parts can get spendy if it don't pass.
I lived in Cali. for a while and been that route !
95 and older as long as the SES light ain't on and the cat is in place along
with the mechanical inspection will have no prob. passing................

As far a mpg. my 03 does a easy 25 mpg. avg. as long as I keep my foot
    outta it ! LOL!!!!!!!!!

My truck gets 12 around town. But I must have it for towing and snowplowing.

My 72 GTO and 72 Fleetwood 75 sit in the barn........No time for them this year!

When I bought my 2004 Deville I was hoping to keep my 98 Deville for a second car (had 40,000 miles at trade in). Problem was that the garage, while two car was not wide enough to comfortably fit both cars. In March of this year I moved to a new home with a wider garage so can now fit two large cars. I have been tempted to buy an older Deville, either 98 or 99 Concours in silver or gold. Problem is I have been unable to find either model year. Am surprised that there is such a shortage of these vehicles given that they are production cars. The alternative would be a Chrysler 300C for a second car. As you can appreciate the difference in cost is about $ 30,000. For this reason I have put the idea on hold.
Certainly a 99 Deville Concours would represent far better value than the 300C.
Any ideas as to how best to search for a 98 or 99 Concours? I live on the west coast and it seems these cars are in even shorter supply here than in other parts of US.. .My budget for the Concours would be $ 12,000 - $ 14,000.

Hello, I am posting this in hopes of getting some answers as to what this problem could be with my sisters car.

She has a 1992 Cadillac Deville and the car seems to "lose all power" at times when driving. When this happens she can pull of the road & sit there a few minutes & let it cool down and be on her way. This seems to happen only when it is hot out & her engine gets hot. She has been calling it vapor locking, but I'm not quite sure that is what it is. This week it has happened over the past 3 or 4 days. Other times, it won't happen for a month or more.

My husband has looked at the car & can't figure out what it is. I do know the thermostat has been replaced. My uncles computer you can put on a car won't/doesn't show anything when ran on it. And there are no check engine lights on.

This car was my grandma's, I believe she bought new or fairly new. She then sold it to my mom who then sold it my sister. So it's been in the family for a couple years, to say the least. And has not been drove hard. To the best of my knowledge I believe my grandma had this checked out when she owned the car b/c that's when this started happening occasionally. Then my mom bought it off her & she lives about 2.5 hrs from where we live & when she would come in, she would have to pull over sometimes 4 or 5 times or more b/c the engine would get to hot I guess & it it would lose all power.

Anyone have any suggestion as to what this can be? My mechanic hubby is stumped along with my uncle who owns a garage. They can't seem to think what the problem could be. Though they have not worked on many cadillacs, could be why.

:confuse: Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance everyone!

    A few thoughts.......NO codes......Dying when hot............

Where do you live ? If snow, ice and salt land a rotted gas line may
be the cause of your problem. Even a garage kept, lo mile car.........

A crank position sensor is another..........Common failure item.
    Will throw no codes.
Has the cat converter been checked...May be plugged.
    Fuel pressure regulator........Another common item.
Easy to check.........Just pull off the vacuum line. If the line is wet...
    Replace..............

Open your e-mail addy (in profile only)...........I have a few more ideas
  • geo9geo9 Member Posts: 735
Concours.............They are hard to find. I think the "oldsters" didn't
like the buckets and floor shift idea not to mention the $$$$ over
the price of a base DeVille or Fleetwood. So not many sold.

When were they made? 96 thru 99?

Me...Still on the hunt. Sure is a chore rowing my own gears.
Gas has dropped almost .50 cents a gallon in the past week so it makes fueling my truck easier! :P
  • bremertongbremertong Member Posts: 436
Yes, the Concours I am looking for was made between 96 and 99. They actually did some tweaking to the 97-99 models which made those years much more desirable than the 96. One disadvantage was that the Northstar of that vintage only ran on premium. I have yet to use 87 octane fuel in the 2004 but like having the option if gas prices keep rising. I saw a base Deville in gold on Friday and it is
to my taste a much more attractive car than my 2004 in light bronze mist. My 98 was also a gold and really a beauty. Am happy to have the 2004 model with features like Onstar and improved handling but wouldn't mind having the older model if I could find one in good condition and at the right price now that my larger garage would fit both cars.
  • geo9geo9 Member Posts: 735
BTW..........Currently in NJ on a roadtrip. Seems my cruise has
"healed itself" or I am getting better setting those confusing
steering wheel controls. Cruise ran rock hard steady thru the
hill n dale of NY, Pa, and NJ....................

Wish they would move them to the top part of wheel and put
the radio or onstar buttons on the bottom !!!!!!!!!!!

    Hows your cruise been doing?

After my 96 it is a treat using 87 in the 03!
  • catron5catron5 Member Posts: 2
Ok, you should be able to email me now through my profile.

We live in Huntington, WV, so we do get some occasional snow (maybe like 2 or 3 inches at most the past 5years), they do salt the roads if they think we'll be getting any snow, and we do get ice, but not bad.

I just spoke with my sister a little while ago & she said she went to put gas in her car and at 8 gallons it kept stopping like it would if the tank was full. Her gas gauge when someone had replaced the fuel tank I'm guessing, is a little off, and so her "empty" line is at 5gallons.This is the 1st time it has acted like it was full & wouldn't take anymore gas. She did eventually end up getting gas in it.

Thanks alot for all the help & suggestions :D
  • bremertongbremertong Member Posts: 436
Cruise control is working about the same, I have become accustomed to the lose
of about two miles an hour after I set it so I generally am prepared to hit the accelerate button once or twice after initial setting of the button. I watch for traffic behind me just in case it fails to take hold as it sometimes does. While I am living with it as is at some point I may try to resolve it with the dealership which has had it three times and could find no problem. Suspect it may be a defect in the buttons on the steering wheel. The service department of the local dealership here is not all that great and the next nearest Cadillac dealership is 125 miles round trip. Most of my driving is short trips, if I were to plan a long trip would probably give one of the dealerships another try at resolution. May call Cadillac Corporate again, they were not much help in the past.

I have not tried 87 octane gas yet but from what you have reported I am encouraged to try it if prices continue to rise sharply.
  • geo9geo9 Member Posts: 735
OH YEA....................87 will run fine.....Not a problem running it
compared to my 96 prem. only model. The 96 would buck, stall,
and ping on anything but prem.

    25+ mpg. to boot !

Do you get the same performance out of the Northstar system on 87 as you get using 91? While I know it will run on 87 was wondering if I would get the same acceleration on 87 as I get on 91?
  • blkhemiblkhemi Member Posts: 1,717
The Concours model of the Deville was acutally in production when the car was remade in '94 It was the first Deville to have the Northstar standard until 1996 when all Devilles had them.

This sight still shows that Caddy still breeds a rare breed. All of mine started up everyday for me. Try that in a Merc or Bimmer.
  • geo9geo9 Member Posts: 735
Hemi...........Your right about that one I think !

Brem............Never tried prem. in my 03. It still boogies when ya
nail it ! Sure needed it the last few days up and down the GSP or
    Trunpike here in NJ.

These left lane campers holding up traffic and causing others to
manuever like maniacs in ALL 3 lanes to get around them sure
disrupts my 70 mph on cruise in the slow lanes with the BOSE
    thundering !

That n-star sure goes to 100 plus to get away from that mess
quick! OOOPPPssssss watching for cops !
Sure is handy on on ramps too !!!! :P

What model is your Deville geo? Mine is a '03 DTS loaded with every option that Caddy offers, including Night Vision(not many have them). This thing is ROCK SOLID. I've owned a lot of cars, but this one for some reason has the right combination of everything. Only problem in 2 yrs and 22,000 miles is my gas bill because I love that Northstar soundtrack: American Muscle. When the 'boss gets tired of driving the 'vette and takes the DTS, I hop in our '05 STS V8 AWD and really carve out corners. Me being a long haul trucker, I stripped out my back a long time ago, I bought the vette for the wife so that she could stay out of the Deville, but as you can see, that didn't work. I am looking into purchasing the '06 DTS performance model. I think that I may wait another year to let GM get the usual kinks out. The Vette is out of the question because I can't squat to get in it. The STS. while a very responsive ride, doesn't have that pillowy soft ride of my Deville.

I have a base DeVille with the goodie pkg. IT HAs THE roof,
bose, bun warmers, chromies, and pearl paint pkg. for around
$2k after a pkg. discount. Sticker was $46K

After rebate, Gm employee disc, Caddy owner loyalty, GM card $$,
it was a shade under 30k minus my 96 trade................

29k miles,so far. Only dealer visit was a emission recall/PCM flash
and a quirky cruise control issue......................... :shades:

Do you have theVogue tires? I Have the Vogue package that the dealer sold me for no extra charge including wheel/tire, carriage top, metal trim, and emblem package. The car was supposed to sticker for about $67,890 with the package but it then decreased to $55,459. Then I got military, employee,gm card, gmac discounts for a grand total of $23,613.09 cash out the door. How's that for wheelin and dealin. I think its about time to replace the Vogue tires because they are getting noisy. The dealer quoted me $241 A TIRE!!!!! I could get Michelin's with the thin white wall ring like on my '97 Deville D'Elegance for $93 a tire. I am pretty sure that I would get the same if not better quiet ride. Just curious if anybody had them on their car. I do like the look of them with the white and gold rings around them, but gee-whiz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • blkhemiblkhemi Member Posts: 1,717
Has any 1 noticed the price DECREASE in the new '06 DTS. The price has decreased dramatically. An '05 base Deville stickered at $46,045. The new one stickers for about $42,000. And thats with more standard equipment. I guess GM really did stick to their promise and lower the price of admission and abolish their stock crushing rebate program. Yet another great move from GM.

How stable is your Deville at 100 MPH, would assume rock solid but was curious.
Does driving even for short periods at 100 MPH shorten oil life? Do you know the rated top speed for your Deville? I have often described Deville as a sports car in a business suit. They really have excellent power. Would these Northstars be able to compete with a 5.7 liter Hemi? I wondered in that the Hemi is rated at 340 Horsepower and the Deville 275-300. What role would gear ratios play in performance of the Hemi vs the Northstar?
  • geo9geo9 Member Posts: 735
Not really anyplace thats safe to run over 100 mph. in
    my neck of the woods......
That was a 1st time and a fluke to get away from the idiots !!!!!

I have had rent a Caddies in Vegas at 120 plus in the desert......
Rent a Lincolns TCs shut off at 117.....The FWD Lincolns shut off about
100 like my GM truck does............................

But rock steady anyhoo in a straight line on a smooth road ! :P

The 300C's axle ratio is about 2.8-2.9:1. They do have a 5 speed transmission. The Deville's axle ratio is 3.11:1 or 3.71:1 depending on what model deville you have.
